'Regardless of whether you select a small or larger scale pattern, just make sure to fully commit! I love to drench a small space to maximize the wow factor. It brings rhythm and movement, balancing beautifully with the painted joinery and dark countertop. It's all about artful layering and a thoughtful approach to the areas where you introduce different materials and textures. Here's a closer at look at the space, and the cues you can take from Marie's timeless ethos.

Sharing a small bathroom from a recent project, Marie has proved that you don't need to fill your space with pattern to add interest. While it can be effective in the right room, if you prefer a more subdued palette, texture is key to an elevated scheme.

This tiny space is decorated with neutral colors, but Marie has introduced a mix of materials, all with unique textures, to really bring the space to life. It has just as much interest as a pattern, but in a more pared-back way.

'Texture becomes the story here,' Marie writes. 'The open weave of abaca brings quiet movement to the walls, its coarse strands catching light in subtle ways. Paired with natural stone, it creates balance as soft meets strong, organic meets refined.'

Every element is considered, from the wall finishes to the decorative details. As Marie explains, contrast is key here – natural, organic materials pair with rougher, more industrial finishes like concrete for a layered look. And there are a few places to focus your attention.

The Wall Finishes

In a small bathroom, the walls need to work harder. In Marie's design, she chose to introduce a textured wallpaper, Synamay Chalk Wallpaper by Mark Alexander, to bring warmth and tactility to the space.

But bathroom wallpaper is not the only option, although it is usually the most impactful and inviting. A textured paint finish, like limewash, will also add plenty of texture, although you will need to bring in a softer element somewhere to create contrast between the textures.

Marie opted for the Elliot Medium Dome Pendant from Lumens, a cement-look fixture. It's a much more industrial feature compared to the other materials in the space, adding a smoother texture to the design.

Textured glass can work just as well if you're not so keen on the concrete look. Look for fixtures with an interesting form, whether it's a fluted glass sconce, like the Mallory Crystal Sconce from Pottery Barn, or a ceiling light with hammered glass.

If you've gone more industrial with your sink or wall finishes, your lighting is an opportunity to bring in a softer texture, like a pleated linen or rattan shade, like Anthropologie's Twila Rattan Shaded Sconce.

Even in the smallest space, powder rooms included, there are decor pieces that offer an unexpected place to bring in some much-needed texture. The vanity mirror was the focus for Marie, who introduced an oval, plaster finish design, but a rustic wood or hammered metal option would have the same effect.

Smaller accessories can be considered here, too, such as a soap dispenser or dish in a textured finish, or even bathroom hardware in a brushed or antique finish. It's about the small details and finding new ways to add texture and interest without impeding functionality.

Neutral bathrooms needn't be boring. By bringing in layered textures, you can create an inviting, visually interesting scheme that rivals even the most stylish patterned spaces. And her latest bathroom project is a testament to her beloved approach. It feels less like a functional room, and more like a cozy space you want to spend time in – which is exactly why this vintage-style bathroom works so well.

From the botanical wallpaper to the terracotta floor tiles and washstand vanity, there's much to love about this space, with numerous elements working together to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. And it's easier to recreate than you might expect.

There's naturally a coldness to bathroom materials. Tiles on the floors and walls, sinks and tubs made from acrylic-coated steel, and bathroom hardware in varying metallic tones – it can all begin to feel very sleek and uninviting.

But whenever Heidi Caillier is in charge of the design, the bathroom feels quite the opposite, instead embracing warm hues, tactile materials, and a layered approach to decor that feels miles away from the utilitarian spaces we are so used to.

And this bathroom is no different. Her caption sums it up perfectly; it's 'a space you never want to leave.' So many elements and features make this space feel so special – here's how she created the look.

To add to the vintage feel, Heidi has introduced a traditional washstand in place of a bathroom vanity, which might take away some storage, but it's a feature that adds to the lived-in, cozy feel of the room. It also gives the illusion of greater space thanks to the uninterrupted flow of floor tiles. The curved edge also softens what can often be a hard, angular feature. If you think about it, a bold powder bathroom approach makes total sense. 'It’s the perfect spot to take the scheme from the rest of the home and turn it up a few notches to its fullest expression,' says designer Rachel Sherman of Rachel Sloane Interiors.

'Typically no one is spending large amounts of time in there, so the argument that something is “too bold to live with” doesn’t have legs,' she explains. 'I love the powder room because there are a finite number of components to select, and for the few moments spent inside, each will be considered together.'

Because they're compact, not typically used every day, and mostly frequented by guests, they become the perfect space to be bold, take design risks, and play up your personality, Kristina Khersonsky of STUDIO KEETA explains.

'Powder rooms (and small bathrooms in general) are some of the best spaces in a home to go bold,' says Kristina. 'From an architectural standpoint, powder rooms are often small or shaped a little oddly. That innate quirkiness actually lends itself to more experimental design choices.'

'It’s a great space to play with unexpected bathroom colors, textures, and materials that you’ve been eyeing but can’t necessarily commit to on a larger scale,' she adds. 'They also offer a moment of surprise and delight for guests – a chance to create an experience.'

'We love taking risks in powder baths with bold colors and patterns because generally they are small, so you won’t get tired of them, and it feels like a burst of energy in your journey through the house,' says designer Bess Lovern of Bess Lovern Designs.

'In this powder bathroom [seen above], we wanted the space to feel warm and adventurous,' Bess explains. 'We transformed a 19th-century Belgian dressing table into a bathroom vanity with the original marble top. It was already so beautifully patinated, it added so much personality to the space.'

'We design a lot for clients who love to entertain, and we always encourage them to do something different,' she adds. 'For example, if there was a color or idea that is just completely different from what they have in the rest of the house, but they still love, powder bathrooms are the perfect space to lean into that and be daring.'

If there’s one thing that makes the powder room so appealing, it’s that it allows you to indulge – both creatively and financially – without the commitment or scale of a larger space.

'A powder room provides the perfect opportunity to have fun and be bolder than you might be elsewhere in the house with a small but powerful expression of personality,' says Sarah Ellison from Frank & Faber.

'Usually frequented by guests, it’s great to provide the element of surprise and create a bit of a talking point, and let’s face it, there is the financial factor, as a smaller, self-contained space, this is a great opportunity to invest in bathroom wallpaper, bathroom lighting, and brassware you love but perhaps can’t indulge in on a larger scale.'

'One of my favourites we've designed is a tiny cloakroom in a Grade II listed converted Mill in Dorset, England,' says Sarah of the sweet space seen above. 'We used the beautiful La Pannonine Wallpaper by Pierre Frey alongside a striped encaustic floor tile, fabric shades, and a bobbin coving detail. It provides such a striking contrast to the more pared-back and robust finishes of the rest of the property.'

It’s a clever way of thinking about where to spend and where to save in a remodel – in the powder room, your dream wallpaper or statement sconces suddenly feel much more attainable due to the impact they provide.

'Being compact means that, per square metre, you can afford to be a little more opulent – to reach for that brand or finish you’ve always loved but thought was out of budget,' agrees Rina Patel of Vastu Interior Design. 'It's surprising how little you actually need to make a huge impact.'

Sometimes, it’s the limitations of these rooms that make it so memorable and push you to think differently – and nowhere is that truer than in a historic home.

'I have worked extensively in historic homes, and powder rooms are usually the most wonderful design challenge because, with few exceptions, these rooms are being added to a space for the first time,' says designer Bethany Adams.

Bethany actually faced this in her own 1897 home, where she transformed a former servant’s bathroom under the stairs into something extraordinary. Space was tight, and when a new plumbing vent pipe meant building a false wall, she decided to recess the sink four inches into it, creating the stylish tiled niche seen above.

'Because the space was quite petite to begin with, I chose to leave a niche in the new wall so that the sink could be recessed into it,' she explains. 'Tiling the niche and lighting it made this problematic area an absolute showstopper, and there is not a single person who doesn't comment on it – and none of them have any idea that this beautiful design was born out of necessity!'

As designers know best, these design constraints can often spark creativity, rather than killing it. 'Occasionally, there are powder rooms with no daylight, and those are the most fun to design,' adds Rina. 'You can completely control the mood lighting, creating extra impact and drama. Lighting doesn’t have to be bright; it just needs to be flattering. Soft, warm illumination that enhances the finishes and flatters the person looking in the mirror.'

What I hadn’t quite expected was just how personal designers get about powder rooms. They’re not just spaces to be bold for boldness’s sake; they’re tiny spaces for storytelling.

'Small bathrooms or powder rooms are such a joy to design,' says designer Lauren Gilberthorpe. 'They are compact enough to take risks and play with color, pattern, or finishes without it feeling overwhelming. Creating a bold powder room is about making it personal, whether that is a wall mural celebrating family achievements or a quirky wallpaper that references a much-loved hobby.'

'We often enjoy having a bit of fun in powder rooms, using artwork that tells a story or accessories such as playful books,' Lauren continues. 'I am a firm believer in creating statement rooms in small spaces, so it is a chance to be more whimsical.'

'From painted panelling to botanical wallpaper, or even a curved, ultra-minimalist design, we have worked on a huge variety of bathrooms. One thing remains constant – they are personal and celebrate the people who live there.'

'Once you’ve defined the personality of the room, you can start layering details,' adds Rina. 'The toilet may be functional, but the basin, taps, lighting, mirrors, and accessories are your chance to make a statement. Clients adore powder rooms because they surprise and delight within the smallest of footprints. It’s the room guests whisper about later – “Have you seen the bathroom?” – because it lingers in their minds.'

'It’s the smallest space in the house, but most people who walk through your door will end up in that room, so I love to create an enveloping visual experience,' adds Jeff Andrews of Jeff Andrews Design. 'In particular, the powder is a perfect opportunity to experiment with bold, unique wallcoverings and lighting. Even for the most subtle aesthete, a powder bath is the place to go bold.'

And if there’s one lesson to take from the designers I spoke to, it’s that decorating a powder room is about creating a statement.

'I love designing powder rooms, they’re such fun spaces to get creative with,' says designer Sean Symington. 'I find that often the smaller the room, the bolder you can be.'

'I think the trick is to see them as an extension of the home and not just a forgotten corner, so I try to avoid anything too clinical,' Sean advises. 'I like to add warmth and personality through color, texture, and lighting.'

Sean’s approach is a masterclass in balance. He explains how his favorite approach is to combine half-height panelling with complementary wallpaper, soft wall lighting with gathered lampshades, and artwork that brings humor or charm. A statement mirror, he adds, can make all the difference – reflecting both light and personality back into the space.

You probably spent hours browsing the best places to buy bathroom vanities to find the perfect design for your space, so it seems a shame to ruin the look with clutter and damage. But with this designer advice, your bathroom will look chic and elevated in no time.

1. Oil-based products

A bathroom vanity is usually the best place to get ready in the morning and unwind in the evening, so leaving your skincare and makeup on the counters feels convenient. But, according to Barrett Cooke, principal at Arterberry Cooke Architecture, you should 'never put oily beauty products on a porous countertop-vanity.'

'Often, we will design vanities that intentionally have very little space on the counter so that there is not an opportunity for the detritus of life to pile up. In those cases, we make sure to provide ample storage in the vanity cabinet,' says Barrett.

'In other bathroom areas, we carry out small makeup vanity spaces to aid in keeping the sink vanity clear while designing spaces that will eventually do quite a bit of work,' she explains, which creates a dedicated zone for products that doesn't clutter or damage your main vanity countertops.

'These utilitarian items immediately disrupt the visual harmony of a well-designed bathroom. A vanity should feel serene and intentional, not like the backstage of your morning routine,' says Philip Thomas Vanderford, founder of Studio Thomas James.

Electronic devices, in particular, should not be placed on your vanity, as they not only look messy but can also pose a safety hazard. 'We find the most common no-nos usually require an unsightly cord – electric toothbrushes, shavers, nose hair trimmers, night guard cleaners, sleep apnea machine components, hair dryers, hair styling tools,' adds interior designer Georgia Zikas.

'We design built-in custom cabinetry to accommodate towels to be handy and within easy reach, and hair dryers and styling tools to be tucked away and hidden in a drawer or hanging behind a cabinet door. We always make sure to have a hidden electrical outlet included in the design so the cord doesn't need to be visible. When these things have a home or a good-looking place to land, they do not become a visual nuisance.'

4. Your toothbrush and toothpaste

There are some things you need to keep in your bathroom – realistically, there is no better place than your vanity to keep your toothbrush and toothpaste, but leaving them haphazardly on the counters looks messy and borders on unhygienic.

'Some families have toothbrushes, both upstairs and downstairs, and people will brush their teeth in the powder room as an additional option. That’s fine as long as you have a vanity drawer or medicine cabinet to put them away in, so it looks more visually pleasing,' says interior designer Andrea Sinkin.

'I don’t like anything on the counter that’s not beautiful. If you have an electric toothbrush, have your contractor install an outlet inside a medicine cabinet that is recessed in the wall,' she suggests.

If you're not in a position to make these sorts of changes, there are smaller swaps you can make that will instantly elevate the look of your vanity. You can find some really beautiful toothbrush holder designs that will feel considered and intentional, rather than having your toothbrushes left on the side or in an ugly old cup.

'Even a few stray drops can leave rings or marks that are difficult to remove, especially if they sit unnoticed on the surface,' he adds. Instead, keep them in your medicine cabinet, or even in a dressing room where you get ready for the day.

'The best alternative is to store perfumes and similar products on a tray, shelf, or in your vanity drawers. That way, they are still within easy reach but safely away from materials that could stain or corrode. It also helps keep the vanity clear and uncluttered, which is key to maintaining that calm, spa-like feel most of us want from a bathroom.'

More often than not, ugly packaging is what's ruining your bathroom vanity display. Plastic containers that essentials like cotton pads come in look cheap and unaesthetic, as do overly colorful designs that disrupt your scheme.

'Can we please stop leaving Q-tips, soap, and cotton balls out in their store packaging?' questions Kasandra Rafter, founder and principal designer at Canyon Creative Studio. 'It’s not cute. Even the new “designer” plastic containers aren’t much better than the blue Q-tip box,' she notes.

'Use beautiful countertop canisters to hide the everyday stuff. Add a small tray to corral jewelry or hand towels. It instantly feels more intentional, and all your daily essentials are still right at your fingertips. When everything is cohesive, the clutter disappears. Your bathroom suddenly feels calm, elevated, like a spa.'

When I finished my small bathroom remodel, top of my list was finding a stylish and discreet way to store toilet paper that was handy for guests to grab – and allowed me to get a little creative.

It wasn't until I spotted Lucy Williams' cozy-meets-coastal bathroom that I knew I had the answer. So, I decided to take a cue from her look and found a way to make it practical too: using a large clamshell bowl perched on a vintage stool to hold toilet rolls. This was my reaction too when I first saw an (admittedly beautiful) bathroom sneak onto my Instagram feed, adorned with a plush pink carpet. But since seeing that image weeks ago, it's stayed with me, and maybe it's the algorithm doing its thing, or maybe carpets in bathrooms are actually back for 2025.

Either way, I had to find out from designers if a carpet is a bathroom trend we should be paying attention to. Can it ever work, and should anyone be considering it when doing a remodel?

Carpets were once a very popular bathroom flooring idea. First emerging in the 1950s and really ramping up in the '70s and '80s, carpet became the go-to flooring material used to make the bathroom feel equally as cozy as other rooms in the home.

While a 1980s interior design trend may not sound initially appealing in 2025, we all know this year has been the year of comebacks, and it feels quite right that carpeted bathrooms should make an appearance this year.

There are actually plenty of examples of it working beautifully, too. Take the space designed by Penny Morrison. This is a huge space, it needs the warmth and softness that a carpet brings. There's a certain elegance to it too. I usually associate bathroom carpet with '80s colors like pale pinks and avocado greens, but this look is far more sophisticated.

Speaking of '80s bathrooms, Louise Jones, founder of Fairfax Jones, has embraced this vintage bathroom idea in her own home, pairing a pink suite with a green carpet in true retro style. And it works!

'I love carpets in the bathroom!' she tells me. 'Soft underfoot and warm during those chilly winter months. I think people have always thought them to get wet and become musty, but as long as you use bath mats and open the windows from time to time, you’re fine.'

I do think they’re only suited to period properties – the ones that have character and drafts!' she adds.

Interior designers Mary Graham and Nicole Salvesen from Salvesen Graham also love the return of this retro bathroom idea, and they love incorporating carpet in their projects for its nostalgic charm.

'We often use carpet in bathrooms and feel very confident doing so,' say Mary and Nicole. Referring to a recent project pictured above, they explain 'The carpet in this particular bathroom was a waterproof sisal. It is neutral enough to be styled with any rugs on top.'

'Like a kitchen, we would always view a bathroom as another room to style and decorate like a principal room, many stop at the practical considerations. But a carpet has the effect of softening a room as well as being something warm and comfortable to step out on. In this particular room, it also has the advantage of drying out thanks to the underfloor heating.'

Designer Suzannah Lockwood says that carpets in a bathroom can work in the right setting. But she's skeptical, and believes you can create the same softness a carpet would bring without committing to a wall-to-wall rug.

'The majority of projects I work on are in historic houses, so I like to stay true to the house and use the original floorboards where possible,' she explains. 'However, I do like to treat a bathroom like another room to avoid it becoming clinical, as bathrooms can sometimes be.'

'I wouldn’t necessarily opt for a carpet unless the client specified it as a requirement, but I would opt for something of quality that was resistant to water damage if they did. Instead, I would add rugs, fabric lampshades, and artwork, etc, to introduce color and soften these spaces.'

There is no denying that the biggest impracticality of a carpeted bathroom they often don't cope with damp conditions, so if you are considering carpeting your space, you'll need a chic bath mat to stop constant moisture ruining your carpet.

In the case of this bathroom design, the medicine cabinets were positioned on the sides of the vanity, and the main mirror was stationary with no doors that opened,' explains Nureed Saeed, owner and creative director at Nu Interiors.

'This meant that we could have more fun with the lighting because I did not have to consider the functionality of medicine doors opening. Since the vintage mirror was one of the stars of the space, the mid-century inspired lighting by Mitzi for Hudson Valley Lighting Group gave a nice balance to the bathroom design.'

'The choice ensured the lighting did not overpower the mirror wall with too many elements adorning the wall. It’s a clean, simple, stylish choice with many practical design thoughts as well,' he adds.

'We did make sure to layer other lighting in the room and chose a bulb with diffused light to ensure no harsh downward shadows. I also love how they highlight the vanity itself without cluttering the room with big fixtures, so the bathroom feels open, clean, and elevated.'

'Because the tower left no room for sconces flanking the mirrors, the best solution was to place a single wall light in the center to balance both sides,' explains interior designer Terri Brien.

'While most of the bathroom was taken down to the studs, the vanity wall was not. Relocating the vent above the vanity would have been cost-prohibitive, and the existing setup only provided one light above each sink. The addition of the wall light gave the clients an extra light source and created a focal point on the vanity wall,' she adds.

'Layered lighting not only adds visual interest to the room but also sets the mood. From a functional standpoint, the wall light provides balanced illumination at face level, which is much more flattering and useful than relying just on the overhead lighting.'

'From a style perspective, it breaks up the expanse of cabinetry and mirrors, adding visual rhythm to a wall that otherwise might have felt flat. It also softens the space and adds a warm glow, allowing the clients to adjust the lighting to suit their needs – bright for daily routines, or dimmed for a more relaxed atmosphere.'

'I chose to install the lights on the mirror in this bath so the mirror could be as large as possible, and take up the whole width of the wall above the vanity. This is a windowless bathroom, so we needed as much light as possible - a large mirror helps bounce light around and opens up the space,' says interior designer Colleen Simonds.

'Sconces like these provide softer light closer to your face, which is more flattering than, say, the overhead recessed lights. So that is a reason to use them. 'The biggest consideration is planning the tile installation to create as many cuts as possible, meaning you want to create the height of the front apron with full tile dimensions,' Laura notes.

'You can elevate this application but using a stone top for the drop-in bathtub, and could even do stone on the front as well. We do this in all tile colors and stone; it is such a fun way to add style that emphasizes the color and pattern versus your typical apron front bathtub.'

'I love a checkerboard pattern, which we ran on the floor and then ran the pattern up the front of the bathtub as well as the shower wall. This type of application takes a lot of planning, but it creates such a charming room!'

Although some designers found specific products that have enhanced their bathrooms this year, for designer Gillian Gillies, the best thing for her bathroom isn't a product at all – it's establishing a mood. 'Serenity, health and wellness have been at the forefront of our designs,' she tells me. 'I want a bathroom that feels more like a personal sanctuary – a place where you can restore and recalibrate.' And with these designer-owned and approved bathroom products, you can create a spa-like bathroom right in the comfort of your home.

But in her latest project, a small bathroom with a tricky layout, designer Marie Flanigan has proved that the best approach is sometimes to just throw out the rule book and make a few unconventional but impactful changes that bring the space to life.

One comment on this space reads, 'So dang creative!' and I couldn't agree more. This space is out of the box, it's unexpected and exciting, and despite the bold design decisions, the result is a small space that works, and flows, and feels cohesive.

At first glance, the space appears to be a classic bathroom with a timeless color palette. However, as you look closer, you begin to notice several unexpected features that catch your attention. And most of those features are breaking every design rule you always thought you had to follow.

When I first watched Marie Flanigan's video showcasing the newly remodeled space, I couldn't help but be drawn to the vanity area, which, in fact, totally lacks a bathroom vanity in the traditional sense.

Instead, she has introduced a vanity top and a shelf towards the bottom. This still offers some storage; however, it creates the illusion of greater space, which is crucial in this compact and slightly awkwardly-shaped bathroom.

The bathroom sink is another striking feature. While it's often advised to opt for an under-mount sink rather than a countertop basin when space is tight, this design really advocates for going against the grain. The statement sink, made completely from stone, adds a more organic feel that contrasts with the smoother finish of the surrounding wood. I love how the chrome hardware blends in and creates a less utilitarian look.

But the bathroom mirror is the true star of the show. Where you'd usually find an empty wall to locate the vanity so the mirror would be against a solid surface, Marie has worked around the awkward bathroom layout and installed the mirror in front of the window.

It might not be the conventional choice, but it's a key decision that creates a better flow throughout the tight space. And, because the windows are so large, it doesn't stop natural light from filling the room. In fact, this approach offers much better lighting for getting ready.

To reintroduce a sense of calm, she has introduced blue square tiles on the walls of the shower nook, which adds color, contrast, and a classic look.

I think this bathroom is a much-needed reminder that you don't always have to follow the usual design rules, especially if those rules could result in a bathroom that lacks flow and cohesion. In this scheme, taking the unconventional approach was necessary to create a functional and stylish space, rather than a crowded one.

These rooms have become much more considered, still practical of course, but more lived-in, filled with character and warmth to create an inviting atmosphere. It is no surprise, then, that some vanity colors that were once the go-to choices have begun to feel a bit outdated, and bathroom vanity ideas have become more characterful too.

1. High-gloss white

There was a time when a shiny finish on bathroom vanities was the norm, creating a modern bathroom with a minimalist finish. However, it's a look that now feels decidedly outdated, especially in stark colors like brilliant white.

'High-gloss white used to be a staple choice – clean, minimal, and modern – but now it feels a bit cold and one-note, especially as bathrooms evolve into more expressive, design-led spaces. There’s a growing appetite for schemes that feel more layered, personal, and in tune with the character of the wider home,' says Amy Bartlett, creative director at Kast.

'There’s also a move away from overly glossy, reflective surfaces in general, with designers gravitating toward matte finishes and tactile materials that bring a sense of craftsmanship and calm. The overall look is softer, more natural, and far less polished,' she adds.

Instead of high-gloss, embrace matte white hues and design them with lots of texture and interest. 'Use unique details, patterns, finishes, and textures to breathe new life into something that could easily feel dated. Whites tend to feel dull and clinical, so it's about finding interesting ways to contrast that with warmth and character,' says interior designer Lauren Kyle.

Rising trends are all about packing warmth, texture, and personality into home designs, and that generic millennial gray just doesn’t deliver that anymore,' says Miranda Cullen, founder and principal designer of Inside Stories.

'The last thing a bathroom needs is to look colder and more weathered! Gray, especially gray-toned woods, should be the last on your list for a vanity. It feels faux farmhouse, and it adds zero warmth or personality to your bathroom,' agrees Liberty Riggs, founder and principal designer at Morrison Gates.

'I'm over the soulless clinical look of stark white or flat gray. Those safe builder-grade choices may feel clean, but they miss the opportunity to add warmth or character to the space,' adds interior designer Cathryn Lindsey.

Instead, to add warmth and enduring style to your bathroom, embrace a dark wood vanity instead of gray tones. It's much more classic and adds a more characterful look.

4. Trend-led colors

On the other end of the spectrum, trend-led colors are also starting to feel a bit tiresome for a few designers. There's no denying that 2025 has become the year of characterful interiors that imbue eclectic style and abundant personality.

But in the quest to create a more lived-in aesthetic that feels far from the stark Instagram interiors that dominated the 2010s, some designers feel it's gone a step too far, especially in the bathroom.

'I find myself increasingly tired of seeing bathroom vanities treated like seasonal fashion statements. For me, the most timeless and appropriate finishes are either a natural wood stain or a soft white,' says interior designer Christopher Boutlier.

'There was such a strong reaction to the era of builder-grade white bathrooms that the pendulum swung too far in the other direction. Suddenly, everyone was racing to find the next it color. One year it was navy, now it’s scarlet. We’ve cycled through the entire Arts and Crafts palette and are currently wading through a wave of Deco-inspired tones,' he notes.

5. White oak

Bathroom vanities in rich wood tones are on the rise, and while dark and soft woods are a timeless choice, lighter tones like taupe or white-washed finishes feel like a fleeting trend that is not only unimaginative but one we will look back on in five years with distaste.

'While taupe or white oak vanities are constantly referred to as timeless, I think both of these finishes will be instantly dateable to the 2020s in a few years,' says Liberty, who recommends choosing a vanity color that complements the rest of your bathroom rather than choosing a color based on trendiness or perceived timelessness.

'They're popular because they play well with just about anything else in the room, and can add a bit of warmth to an otherwise cold (often all white) space, but to me, choosing a taupe vanity is about as opinionated as choosing a beige wall or a white sofa. It's a non-choice.'

So, what is a better option? If you have your heart set on a wooden vanity, try going for a richer tone rather than white oak. It's a timeless option that still feels neutral, but with far more character. Mixing materials is another fun way to add interest to your bathroom, like in this design.

'I like to intermix colored limewash paint finishes to the vanity, combined with quartz counters and alluring door pulls! Even subtle creams, tans, and corals feel fresh in comparison to no color used at all. 'The hand-painted, patterned floor tiles immediately set the tone, evoking artisan craftsmanship found in traditional Mediterranean homes,' she noted.

'The patterns that are synonymous with this trend are beautiful, take our Sardinia Porcelain Tarricone tiles as a great example – inspired by designs found in old hotels and palaces in Italy, they have an authentic look with a bright Mediterranean blue tone that encompasses this stunning trend. Which is exactly why I've turned to experts to find out the best order to design a bathroom. Here, designers and bathroom experts weigh in on whether you should choose your bathroom paint color or tiles first for an elevated and cohesive scheme.

Should you choose your bathroom paint color or tiles first

How you decorate the bones of your bathroom – A.K.A, the color and tiles on the walls and floor – will not only dictate the overall aesthetic of your space, but also steer the rest of your choices, such as the bathroom vanity and decor. So, where should you start?

'With so many choices out there, designing a bathroom can feel surprisingly daunting. It’s often one of the smallest rooms in the home – and sometimes the most overlooked – but it’s a vital part of the overall design story,' says Alexandra Rees, co-director of District Architects and District Build.

'Starting with a clear idea or mood helps anchor the process; we often begin with a color palette to guide decisions around finishes and details. That clarity early on helps prevent overwhelm later.'

If you're designing a more calming, neutral bathroom, choosing your color palette first will set the tone for the space – and these more pared-back styles are less likely to involve busy, bold tiles that can be difficult to color match.

'For most clients, I recommend choosing the overall color, mood, or energy you want for the bathroom first. If you’re after a calming and neutral look, opt for earthy tones; if you want something fresh and full of vitality, choose green,' says interior designer Erik Munro

'Soothing and serene colors are best suited for blues, while reds and browns create a warmer and cozier atmosphere. Bathrooms can either be a dramatic showpiece or an escape from the world, so deciding what you want it to feel like is always the first step.'

And while we refer to the paint color as the starting point for your bathroom walls, and therefore your overall palette, it could also be a finish or material, especially if you've gone for a plaster bathroom.

'The best bathrooms strike a balance between function and aesthetic,' says Alexandra, who notes that if you are opting for a different wall finish, this will usually always be the starting point.

'In our Color Casing project, the brief was to create a space that worked for a young family – calm, minimal, but still tactile. We used a muted microcement for a raw, textured finish that brought a sense of quietness and practicality.'

However, there are just as many examples where choosing the tiles first makes more sense. In bolder bathroom designs with statement tiles and lots of contrast, selecting a beautiful tile first will make the whole design process much more seamless.

'Often, the tile is the main focal point and the most expensive in the space. Additionally, this allows you to develop a cohesive "storyline" that fits in with the rest of the home, and then the paint color and other details will naturally fall into place,' says interior designer Natalie Rebuck.

'We always recommend selecting your bathroom tiles first. Tiles come with unique undertones, variations, and textures that are fixed. It’s much simpler to custom-match a paint color to complement the unique characteristics of your tile than it is to find a tile that perfectly matches a pre-selected paint,' adds Jamie Chappell, VP of brand and marketing at Fireclay Tile.

Which you choose first will depend on the style of your bathroom. In a tranquil space or a Japandi bathroom, choosing the paint color first makes more sense, as it's the main feature that can easily pair with a simple tile.

If you're going for a bolder, more colorful bathroom with statement tiles, selecting the tiles first will give you the entire palette for the rest of your space, making it easier to find cohesive colors.

'The key is finding one element that excites you and using it as an anchor for the design. Once you have that, everything else falls into place – and that’s where working with a designer can really help bring it all to life,' says Erik.

Don't be afraid to go bold if it suits your style – a statement tile can be really impactful when paired with the right colors and materials.

'If you're doing a DIY, make sure you request samples of the paint colors, tiles, and any other materials you can source from your vendors to make sure they work together before you commit,' advises designer Natalie Rebuck.

The way we use tile trim has evolved over the years, with many approaches feeling outdated. Nowadays, it's much less common to see it in designs, with many designers and homeowners choosing to use different tile shapes to create an interesting edge instead.

But the revival of this more traditional approach has created a charming vintage bathroom feel – and proves that in the right design, there's still a place for this traditional feature in modern-day bathrooms. And it seems his followers agree.

In many ways, this guest bathroom defies this year's bathroom trends. But I think that's what makes it so special – it reimagines a vintage design in a way that feels timeless rather than outdated.

And it seems a lot of us are happy to see the return of these unexpected but timeless design details, with one person commenting, 'love the composition,' and another reflecting on its nostalgia: '[it] brings back my childhood memories growing up in Brooklyn Park Slope Brownstone. And that black and white subway tile detail? That is such a classic. Love it.'

The tile-drenched approach is what caught my eye first. The off-white tiles are a more old-school style, a wider rectangular design rather than the thin subway tiles we are so used to seeing.

Not only has Nate introduced them from floor to ceiling on the walls, but he's also tiled the side of the alcove bathtub, creating a cohesive, all-encompassing finish. It puts the tiles at the forefront of the design, and it's a truly effective approach. I think this is going to be a look that makes a slow and steady comeback, too.

The bathroom tiles instantly bring a vintage feel to the space, and while it's neutral, it still feels warm and inviting. They're also crucial to the contrast that has been created with the rather unexpected black marble tile trim. The simple addition of the black trim running down the edge of the shower area and perpendicular to the edge of the bathtub gives the entire area dimension.

And I can't talk about the design without mentioning the tile trim around the shower niche. Few details have proved more controversial in recent years than a trim around a recessed niche, with designers recommending a mitred edge instead. But here it really works, and feels intentional rather than an afterthought as it so often can.

The reason this more traditional, vintage look works so well here is because of the materials and finishes Nate has introduced to the space. The brassware used for the faucet, shower head, and curtain pole adds instant warmth – and it's a finish we heavily associate with chic, timeless design today.

He's also added subtle marble details, which blend a little bit of contemporary style into the mix. It's been introduced as trim along the edge of the bath and for the niche shelf – small additions that make a huge difference.

The striped shower curtain is another lovely touch. The pattern is classic yet still feels playful – it adds a more tactile element that softens the harder, more angular lines of the space. It's a truly chic bathroom, and it's made me reconsider how I feel about more traditional details and designs.

While your color palette will depend on your bathroom style and personal taste, there are a few palettes that stand out to designers as the most elevated. From choosing the right neutrals and pairing them with chic materials to the bolder tones that give expensive vibes, there's something here for every space.

1. Richy earthy colors

When you're looking for colors that will elevate your bathroom and result in a more expensive-looking scheme, look to hues that feel timeless and luxe. Shades that transcend color trends yet feel considered will always feel more luxe.

'Rich, nature-inspired tones tend to give bathrooms a more luxurious feel. Think mossy greens, earthy terracottas, creamy taupes, and soft sandy tans. 'In our Cloudview Project’s primary ensuite, natural clay-toned zellige tiles were used along the full vanity and tub walls. We balanced the zellige tile with smooth Taj Mahal quartzite stone and sandy-beige limewash on the remaining walls and ceiling for added depth,' she explains.

'In the guest bathroom, we embraced a green-on-green palette inspired by matcha tea. Rich green shower tiles were paired with a sage green limewash to create a tonal effect. Neither room relies on stark white finishes, yet both feel bright, fresh, and timeless thanks to the soft layering of organic tones.'

2. Dark jewel tones

Of course, when asked what colors can make a bathroom look more expensive, many experts responded with a variation on a neutral. And while this is timeless choice, you can create a truly elevated bathroom by decorating with moody colors, too.

'Darker paint colors can bring an unexpected but expensive touch to a space. Colors like Carter Plum CW-355 are full of character,' says Arianna Barone, color marketing manager at Benjamin Moore.

'A bright, white-painted bathroom can feel equally as luxe as darker and moodier hues. Winter Snow OC-63, an optic white paint color with a cool blue undertone, exemplifies that in this image,' says Arianna.

'Bright and sunny natural light and warm wood tones help prevent the space from feeling too stark. The crisp, clean walls feel modern and elevated when paired with a slightly darker trim in Moonshine OC-56. This brings just the right amount of contrast, so the space feels intentional and refined.'

'With the exception of powder rooms – in which anything goes, and bolder is often better – the key to an expensive-looking bathroom color scheme is to stick to neutrals, with perhaps hints of colors within natural materials,' Bethany explains.

'Bold color choices in bathroom tile and stone slabs are a favorite of mine and many other designers, but unless you have total confidence in the longevity of your devotion to say, mustard yellow tile, I'd urge you to consider a palette of beiges, whites, or gray.'

Is a bold, colorful bathroom tempting? Absolutely. But Bethany warns this is best done with your decor. 'What looks easy to accomplish on Pinterest actually involves a lot of skill and careful consideration. You can always add personality to a neutral bath with styling: think brightly colored runners (I love an indoor-outdoor carpet in a bathroom), towels, shower curtains, or vanity accoutrements,' she suggests.

'The main issue with the original space was simply how bland and lacking in personality it was! It was very functional and a good size, just not my taste at all,' says owner Jennifer Rothbury, the creator behind @crack_the_shutters on Instagram.

Because the original space was still functional, Jennifer took her time considering the space and how she wanted the design to look, which meant rather than jumping into the remodel, she initially opted for a few DIY fixes.

'The bathroom was a bit of a cobbled-together DIY project. It had originally been a good size but covered in very dull beige bathroom tiles, which I decided to try and improve for a year or two to allow saving for the renovation,' she explains. 'I painted and stencilled the tiles and painted the faucets and radiators.'

But it was surely worth the wait, with the new bathroom design exuding a timeless, serene feel. 'The bathroom layout stayed the same as had been tried and tested in the old space and worked well as a family bathroom. The beige tiles were all removed, and a stud wall was added to conceal the cistern and create an arched marble alcove,' she says.

While the functionality of the bathroom was a huge priority, so was the atmosphere and feeling that Jennifer wanted to create. It was about taking a utilitarian room and creating a retreat that felt calming and a comfortable place to unwind.

'When designing the bathroom, the style I was aiming to achieve was a calm, timeless sanctuary where I could unwind after a hectic day,' she explains, which heavily influenced her material choices.

'I knew the renovation would be fairly costly, so I wanted to make sure that my choices weren’t fads or following trends and would stand the test of time. I wanted a bathroom that was both visually pleasing and tactile, and making choices like the arch and rounded edge bath made the room feel softer and more sculptural.'

The marble, in particular, brings a real sense of luxury to the overall design, adding contrast and sophistication in abundance. But it's a feature that caused a few headaches throughout the design process.

'The main challenge was definitely the marble. The company I used sold me a slab which then turned out not to exist, so a week before the plating, I had to choose a new slab without ever viewing it,' Jennifer recalls.

'The marble base for the shower tray then cracked in transit, so everything from then on was delayed until a new piece could be made and delivered. Having said that, I have no regrets about going with marble – it still looks as good as new!'

And while the marble is a statement feature, there's something else that, for Jennifer, feels utterly special. 'The standout feature is definitely the flooring. Terracotta is a less common choice for bathroom flooring, but I adore it. It really warms the space, and the rustic look softens the room.'

Materiality really comes into its own in this design. There's a beautiful contrast between the more rustic terracotta floor tiles and the smooth, sleek finish of the marble that feels perfectly curated.

'The material choices consist mainly of wood, terracotta, and marble – all natural materials which I felt worked beautifully together,' Jennifer notes, which has created a seamless flow throughout the bathroom.

'They are all very tactile materials with natural and individual patterns and grains running through them, which is visually pleasing. Natural materials do require a little more maintenance with sealing, but that little effort is worth the beauty of them in my opinion!'

When you think of a medicine cabinet, those chunky cupboards that feel decidedly more functional than aesthetic probably come to mind. However, designs have come a long way, and most now feature a mirror to create a hidden storage option. But are designers still embracing them?

'Medicine cabinets aren’t necessarily out of style, but traditional boxy designs can feel clunky and often dominate a space. When thoughtfully considered, recessed or concealed cabinets can offer a smart storage solution, especially in rooms where space is at a premium,' says interior designer Lauren Gilberthorpe.

'With the right materials and integrated lighting, they can become a subtle design feature that enhances the overall ambience of the bathroom. A recess built into the wall cavity allows the cabinet and shelving to sit flush, creating a more streamlined look. It’s also worth exploring different materials,' she adds.

Because medicine cabinets are so useful, especially in small bathrooms that lack space for an alternative, they will never go out of style, unless something new is created that exceeds their functionality. 'Medicine cabinets are a great way to make a bathroom more functional without sacrificing design aesthetics. With some projects, we will custom-design the medicine cabinet and have one of our millworkers make it according to the specific needs of the client,' she adds.

'A medicine cabinet doesn't have to be mirrored – it could be finished in tongue and groove panelling or rustic timber to tie in with the vanity and add texture to the room. Salvaged pieces can also work beautifully,' says Lauren.

Your medicine cabinet is also a great place to consider introducing a vintage or antique design for a characterful detail. 'If you find an antique with the right proportions, a joiner can adapt the doors and shelves to fit neatly within a custom recess,' Lauren adds.

Your bathroom vanity might be only a portion of your space, but these small design decisions have a big impact on the overall look and functionality of your space, so getting it right is really key. So, where should you start?

'I almost always choose the lighting first! Electrical boxes are typically already in a fixed location, so I like to start by selecting the perfect sconce (or sconces), since their placement often dictates size and shape,' says Louise Copeland, founder and lead designer of L.B. Copeland Interior Design.

If your wiring is already in situ, the spacing you have to play with is already set. Whether you have space for lighting above or on either side of the bathroom mirror, the size of your fixtures will dictate how large your mirror can be.

'From there, it becomes much easier to determine the right mirror – one that complements the lighting in both scale and style. If you're aiming for a more polished, classic look, I usually match the sconce finishes to the plumbing and choose a mirror or medicine cabinet with a simple, timeless profile,' Louise explains.

'However, if there's room to be more playful, I enjoy mixing finishes and materials –think ceramic sconces with a rattan mirror or fabric sconce shades with a lacquered frame,' she adds.

But what if you're in control of where your electrics will be wired? 'I typically select vanity lighting first because the wiring needs to be located in advance,' says interior designer Martha Mulholland.

'If that wasn’t the case, however, I’d suggest sourcing them both at once, along with the taps and bathroom hardware, to ensure the finishes are considered and cohesive. I also tend to follow a “rule of twos” when it comes to metal finishes in a bathroom, as it can look a bit disjointed to have more than two in a small space,' she adds.

It is a great way to find unique and beautiful fabrics without having to spend a fortune per metre, just be sure to check the measurements before ordering!

Now that the sink skirt is in place, the bathroom feels so much more considered. I finally have a home for my overflow of skincare – and it’s all hidden behind a pretty curtain that actually adds texture and color to the space.

It’s a small DIY update, but a budget-friendly, easy one that has made a big difference in both the function and feel of the room, and makes the room feel more designed than it did before. I just wish I'd done it sooner.

It really seems 2025 is the year of paneled bathroom walls – and I for one am so here for it. And this vintage bathroom is further proof of how timeless and versatile this decorative style can be.

I am lucky enough to have some of the world's most beautiful bathrooms come across my desk, but this one is the nicest, most interesting I have seen recently. Located in an East Hamptons home designed by Heidi Caillier, truly stands out. It exudes vintage style, filled with character, personality, and unique features.

The paneled walls add so much to the overall space. Not only do they add a textural feature to the walls, but they instantly draw the eye up to the beautiful pitched ceiling. And painted in a warm white hue, it creates the perfect backdrop for the vintage-inspired furniture.

And it's designer Amber Lewis's Carolina project that has me reconsidering why bathroom tiles have always been the top choice. Sure, they are practical but a pretty generic choice too right?

In Amber's projects, a fully paneled scheme filled with warm neutral hues, classic design details, and totally chic accessories has transformed this tree-house-style abode's bathroom into an unexpectedly stylish space.

As soon as you think about designing a bathroom, creating stylish, yet functional surfaces (think water splashes and humidity) is always a priority. And while tiles are the most popular, Amber Lewis has thrown out the rule book with this design, opting for a less expected but totally stylish space.

The bathroom is in a home located in the North Carolina mountains surrounded by trees and hills, so she wanted to echo that in the design. And what could be more fitting the an elevated tree house-style interior?

To achieve this, she's incorporated a huge emerging design trend this year – panel drenching, which she carried over from the bedroom to create a sense of cohesion. It's an unconventional choice for bathroom walls, but it really does work. It has the perfect blend of modern and traditional and walks the line between polished and rustic.

'Tile drenching, a popular trend in which walls, floors, and even ceilings are covered in the same tile, takes this concept even further. Enveloping a bathroom in tiles from top to bottom creates an ambience that feels uber modern and seamless,' says Mike.

'The colour selection of your tiles is key here: light hues, such as crisp whites or soft greys, create an open and airy atmosphere, while richer, warmer tones offer a cocooning, intimate effect. You can also match your grout color to your tiles for a flawless finish to enhance the seamless effect and achieve a luxurious, spa-like feel.'

There really are no rules on how you should or shouldn't design a bathroom, so whether you opt for one tile throughout your scheme or introduce a bold statement in your shower area is entirely up to you.

It's worth taking on this expert advice, though. In more compact or tiny bathrooms, a contrasting shower tile is likely to make your space feel smaller and disjointed, unless your shower is quite separate from the rest of the bathroom, like in the design pictured above.

'Terracotta is a material that connects your bathroom to nature and whispers of Mediterranean shores while still feeling totally at home in a Georgian townhouse or industrial conversion. With new shapes, patterns, and layouts making their way to the scene, terracotta is far from a fleeting trend,' Grazzie adds.

'Terracotta tile can be used in bathrooms, but there are factors to consider when using it in a wet location. It is naturally a more porous material compared to other types of tile; as such, it needs to be properly sealed and requires regular resealing, at least once a year,' explains Kate Donahue, of Four Brothers Design + Build.

It's important to understand that it's not just the wear on the tiles themselves that can be a problem when inadequate sealing is done – the subsequent damage can be much more extensive.

If you feel wary about the upkeep, consider adding terracotta tiles to an area of your bathroom that comes into contact with a reduced amount of water – perhaps a feature wall or behind a vanity – essentially anywhere away from the shower.

'Bathrooms are high-moisture environments, and without adequate sealing, water can seep into grout lines, cracks, and porous materials like terracotta. This leads to mold growth, mildew build-up, subfloor damage, and even structural deterioration over time,' warns Grazzie.

'To make sure your terracotta tiles last, they will need to be sealed before being grouted and again after grouting. They may then need sealing every few years to ensure they last. However, as a natural material, they will patinate over time, but that is the beauty of them,' she adds.

Remember that there is a difference between damage and patina – if you choose terracotta tiles in your bathroom, do it knowing that they will wear over time to create a beautifully aged and lived-in look.

'Terracotta tiles work great in a bathroom and have longevity as they've been used for thousands of years! There are so many options now with painted, glazed, or bare terracotta so it really can work anywhere,' says Stefan Hurray, of BVA BarnesVanze Architects.

It's a classic material that you can be confident won't date. Have fun experimenting with colors, textures, and even your tile layout patterns and ideas.

But there was one problem with my bathroom lighting that I didn't even know was a problem, I thought it was just a fact of life. Every time I needed to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night I'd reach for my phone by the side of my bed, blearily fumble for the torch and stumble my way down the the hall, trying not to open my eyes too much for fear I'd not be able to go back to sleep. Then I'd open them properly anyway, trying to find the off button for my phone torch as I got back into bed.

I honestly just thought this bathroom lighting mistake was one that everyone had to deal with, and it didn't occur to me there might be a solution. Until I got chatting to the interior designer Lucy Barlow, co-founder of Barlow and Barlow, who gave me the answer I never knew I needed. It's super easy and super cheap.

Lucy and I were talking about bathroom lighting generally, preparing for a talk we were giving in the Original BTC showroom. She says that she doesn't always think practically when it comes to lighting ideas, that her brother – the other Barlow in her studio, Barlow & Barlow – deals with all of that, as he's a lighting designer by trade. But clearly his expertise has rubbed off on her, and she had a lot to tell me about the perfect bathroom lighting.

'Normally with modern lighting systems, you have scenes, pre-set,' Lucy was telling me. 'One bright one for doing your make-up, one for when you're relaxing in the tub and so on.' I'd not done that in my bathroom remodel, and oh, I wish I had added more types of bathroom lighting – but my lights are on dimmers and aren't too hard to adjust. 'And then of course I always use PIR sensors,' Lucy added.

PIR sensors? What are they? I am always listening out for new things in design I have yet to hear about. Was this some kind of funky new fixture?

'They're Passive Infrared Sensors,' Lucy schooled me. 'Electronic sensors that come on in the middle of the night when they sense movement, and will emit a very low level of light, so they don't disturb anyone and are less likely to wake you up fully than if you turn on the overhead lights.'

You mean, not everyone uses their phone torch?

Lucy just laughed. 'No Pip,' she said. 'They don't.'

Mind-blowing stuff, and while not a new design-led find, I was still very impressed. And after a bit of research, I found that PIR sensors are plug-in, meaning that unlike the scenes Lucy was talking about, you add them into your bathroom lighting plan at any time, super affordably.

They look a little like those plug-in air fresheners, and yes, I now have one in the hallway between my bedroom and the bathroom. Its glow is just enough that it reaches into the bathroom itself, meaning I don't have to turn on any overhead lights, and I can easily get straight back to sleep. I ordered one for under $10, next day delivery, and my life is hugely improved.

And I am going to invest in PIR lighting beyond the bathroom too, I am going to add one into my downstairs entryway for any late nights or early morning commutes when the overhead light is just too much, and one in my kitchen too, so I am not fumbling for a glass of water or mid-night cup of tea. Luckily, my purchase came in a pack of four, so I have plenty left over to dot around the rest of my home.

'Poor lighting, especially harsh overhead fixtures without soft ambient layers, can make a bathroom feel dim and enclosed. Since the entire house was focused on bringing the outdoors in, incorporating a courtyard moment into the primary bath space made perfect sense. Elizabeth seized the opportunity to bring in natural light, greenery, and also an outdoor shower, which is open to the sky.

To truly immerse yourself in nature, decorating with green is the only way. In this bathroom, overlooking trees and flooded with natural light, the clients asked to be surrounded by green as part of their daily routine.

Architecture studio Bradley Van Der Straeten obliged, using textured but smooth plastered walls in earthy green and glossy finger mosaics with emerald-green depth. ‘We also brought in shape, practicality, and a focal point by placing the shower at one end within a circular, exaggerated sill to the window,’ says director George Bradley.

He continues, ‘The variations in texture and tone around the vanity highlight the natural imperfections of the handcrafted bathroom tiles. We paired the vanity with reclaimed marble basins I sourced from Spain; their unique, raw finish perfectly complements the rustic feel of the space.’

Whether it's through colors, materials, or plants, bringing a feeling of the outdoors into the bathroom enhances well-being and sets a positive tone for the day. As well as being a very chic and on-trend way to decorate, of course.

And it's not unusual for a bathroom to be on the smaller side, especially when you live in an older home. I know this better than most – my '60s-built property is long and narrow, with the small bathroom squeezed between rooms half under the stairs.

Changing the bathroom layout is out of the question – everything is already where it fits best – which for years left the space feeling slightly cramped. But there was one oversight that I discovered years later – here's the surprisingly simple swap that's fixed my small bathroom problems.

Renovating a bathroom can be really quite stressful. Our remodel was done years ago when bathroom furniture was less readily available, so you sort of just accepted the standard sizes and designs when it came to the bathtub and the sink. And as the only bathroom in the house, we just needed it fitted and ready to use as quickly as possible.

But in such a small space, once the bath, vanity, and toilet were all fitted, we were left with a rather small walkway. And though it was functional, there's no denying it could have benefitted from a little bit more floor space.

Well, turns out there is an incredibly practical and surprisingly simple swap. After years of use, it was finally time to upgrade our bathroom sink – and my attention was taken by narrow vanity units, designed specifically with small schemes in mind.

To put things into perspective, a standard bathroom vanity usually has a depth of around 22 inches, which fits an average-sized sink and a good-sized countertop. However, narrow vanities can range from a depth of 16 to 18 inches, returning enough floor space to make the overall footprint of your bathroom feel larger.

While an extra four to six inches might not sound like a lot, it's really noticeable in a small bathroom. The walkway has widened, there's far more space for getting ready in the mornings, and it's even made cleaning much easier.

And for me, this was a game changer. I could still introduce a vanity with storage, plenty of countertop space, and a really stylish design – and the result was a bathroom layout that felt much less cramped and more useable.

Of course, if you do swap out a large bathroom vanity for something smaller, you need to consider the possibility of exposed sections where the flooring doesn't match. We luckily had leftover wood panels from when we had last updated the bathroom flooring, which made it an easy fix.

So, if your small bathroom is feeling cramped and awkward, this is your sign to consider a narrow vanity. I know changing a major detail in your space feels like a large and difficult job, but I was totally surprised by how quick and easy it was to do.

By reducing the depth by just a few inches, you can make a small bathroom look bigger than it really is.
