And I've asked them to share their stylish tips and tricks so you can ensure your kitchen feels perfectly prepared for hosting family and cooking up seasonal feasts.

How Designers Elevate Their Kitchens for Winter

We're not talking about making major changes to the bones of your kitchen, nor are we suggesting you go out and spend a fortune on new furniture. Instead, our trusted interior design contacts are suggesting smaller ticket ways to give your kitchen a spruce up – most of which you either already have in your home or are easy and affordable to introduce.

1. Fill Your Kitchen with Winter Scents and Foliage

If you want to bring the essence of winter into your kitchen, it doesn't get easier than seasonal foliage (even if it's a few foraged branches) and a wintry scent that brings a sense of warmth and comfort to your space.

'In the winter, I want my kitchen to feel like a warm hug. For me, that starts with fresh wintry touches and scents as you open the door to our home. We love the mix of holiday greens and citrus. I keep a simmer pot on the stove with oranges and cinnamon sticks,' says interior designer Ami McKay.

If you like woody scents with cedarwood and fresh balsam, try The Gather Candle by Anthropologie, or for something more Christmassy, the Winter Spruce Scent Collection from Pottery Barn smells festive and has the most charming design.

To enhance the wintry scents, pairing them with displays of foraged greenery is another effective yet low-cost way designers invite the season into their kitchen – it's a small but easy way to decorate that always impresses guests.

'I bring in foraged greenery from our property. I arrange branches in a stone vessel and place it on our kitchen countertop, and tie a little nosegay to our light fixture. It’s the clustering of little vignettes with a mix of holiday and non-holiday items that makes the home feel relaxed and welcoming,' says Ami.

'Creating that kind of warmth in the kitchen changes how the whole house feels. It slows the pace. People linger a little longer, sit down, and they talk while we cook. The space becomes less about getting dinner on the table and more about being together,' she explains.

2. Create a Warming Ambiance with Lighting

In the winter, every room of the home feels darker, especially the kitchen, where you might usually rely on daylight to brighten the space. But designers say leaning into the darker evenings and bringing in ambient light sources instantly elevates the space.

'Like many families, in the dark doldrums of winter, the kitchen is where my girls and I go to spend cozy time together. Of course, it helps that we have large windows to let what little sunlight there is through, but I also made a point to layer in different lighting – recessed, pendants, and sconces – for those dark early evenings,' explains interior designer Bethany Adams.

'Warm lighting is a quick and easy way to make any space feel cozy,' adds interior designer Nadia Watts, who takes the same approach during the winter. 'Use lamps and layer your lighting. A lamp on the kitchen counter can do wonders for cozying up your kitchen and making it feel warm and inviting. Be sure to use soft warm-white or yellow bulbs.'

If you don't have space for a small counter lamp, there are plenty of other places you can add them. Open shelving is a stylish choice, as is a dining table, where Helen Parker, creative director of deVOL Kitchens, focuses her attention in her space.

'I have a little rechargeable lamp on my dining table. It's been such a wonderful thing, I love having a small atmospheric little pool of light in an otherwise dark room, it feels very bistro,' she explains.

3. Curate Multiple Seating Areas

For Bethany, the winter season signals hosting and gathering with loved ones, so having somewhere for all of her guests to comfortably sit and relax in her kitchen is an important element.

'Besides bright, welcoming light, we have multiple seating areas. Stools at the counter for eating, of course, but also a cozy settee loaded with pillows and a blanket for morning snuggles. A sturdy marble bistro table nearby holds coffee and hot chocolate,' she explains.

You don't have to go out and buy lots of new furniture to create comfortable seating areas in your kitchen. Add seat cushions to existing dining chairs and counter stools, bring in a couple of accent chairs from your living room, or add a charming little bistro set to create an eat-in area.

4. Layer up Textiles

Nothing makes a room feel more inviting during the winter months than layered textiles. And the kitchen is no exception. For Nadia, that means filling her kitchen with rugs, blankets, and even heavier curtains.

'Layer rugs, textiles, and even window treatments. Add textiles in a cozy boucle, velvet, mohair, and fur. Layer rugs or swap flat-weave rugs for heavier ones,' she suggests, emphasizing their ability to add warmth and comfort to a kitchen.

Runners usually work best in a kitchen, whether you have a galley layout or a large island, and the long, narrow form suits the walkway. 'I love pieces with history and sentimental value. When you display personal items like photos, artwork, and objects collected over time, your space will feel homey and cozy. Surrounding yourself with meaningful and cherished items will create a sense of belonging, comfort, and warmth,' says Nadia, of her favorite winter ritual.

A few frames filled with family photos on the walls or layered on shelves, your grandmother's treasured plate sets that you inherited displayed on plate racks, or trinkets from your favorite travels can make a huge difference to the appeal of your kitchen during the winter.

6. Mix Materials and Textures

A kitchen is a room that is often filled with cold surfaces and hard lines – it's just the functional nature of these hardworking rooms. But Interior designers like to introduce more texture and mixed materials for a more inviting atmosphere through the winter. And Ami likes to bring in plenty of different materials and displays.

'It always comes down to a few honest, hardworking pieces. Big wooden boards that live on the counter year-round, ready for anything, hand-thrown pottery in soft earthy glazes, miniature fresh Christmas trees to add to empty vessels in the kitchen (there’s never too much greenery in my mind), a large bowl overflowing with oranges, and a stack of linen napkins at the ready,' she explains.

'We switch out the light summery cushions and replace them with our wintry versions. These textures immediately warm up a kitchen. Vintage vessels and beautiful artisan pieces layer in that sense of history I’m always creating,' she adds, explaining the importance of these softer textures.

7. Don't Forget Candlelight

Nothing feels more nostalgic and comforting than the gentle glow of candlelight, and designers say it's one thing they always bring into their kitchens during the colder, darker season. Whether you light something scented on your kitchen island or display tapers on the walls and window sills, it's a touch that instantly feels more ambient.

'My kitchen is not a particularly bright room and tends to be quite dark, so it lends itself well to candles. I have two beautiful vintage candle sconces on either side of my window, and when the candles are lit, it looks beautiful and inviting. I think candles on walls are so much better than any other type; they really do create something special,' says Helen.

'My kitchen is always the most popular place to hang out in my house, so it's very important that it feels comfortable and inviting. Cooking a meal, sitting on the sofa, or chatting around the table, my kitchen is a little world of its own when the candles are lit and the winds are howling outside. It makes me feel less sad about the summer being over.'

It really is the small details that make the most difference to the atmosphere of your kitchen during winter. From adding small seating areas and filling the room with seasonal scents to lighting candles and adding a small lamp, it's as much a feeling as it is an aesthetic.

And Helen puts it perfectly: 'I think it’s probably the smell and anticipation of a family meal, cooking, prepping, and chatting, is the key to creating a truly warm feel both physically and mentally.'

Which is why we are currently seeing the rise of the soft kitchen, an ode to comfortable interiors and celebrating the kitchen as the heart of the home. And it's a shift that interior designers are enjoying and encouraging.

What's the Appeal of a 'Soft Kitchen'?

A soft kitchen really is as it sounds. Softer edges, warming colors, and cozy decor combine to create a space that, while still functional, doubles up as an inviting room to spend time in beyond cooking, dining, and cleaning.

It's about introducing softer elements, like throw cushions on seating, upholstered bar stools, layered window treatments, and even designing a space that hides appliances for a less functional look.

'Soft kitchens feel warmer, more relaxed, and more like living spaces than sleek, utilitarian kitchens. The appeal lies in creating a space that feels social and inviting, reflecting how clients use the kitchen for gathering, working, and unwinding rather than just cooking,' explains Cath Beckett, co-founder of Yellow London.

'We achieve this through focusing on comfort and character. Natural materials, bursts of color, and layered textures help soften the space, while elements like upholstered seating, colorful rugs, wall or table lights, and artwork make it feel more homey.'

It coincides with the shift towards open plan and multi-functional spaces, which means our kitchens not only need to look more cohesive with our living spaces, but they also need to cater to our every need, whether it's a homework station-meets dining space, or a prep area that doubles as a home bar.

'In my opinion, kitchens are no longer just work zones; they’re the heart of the home. Clients want them to feel warm, inviting, and connected to the rest of their living spaces. A soft kitchen blurs the line between function and comfort; it’s where design meets daily life,' says Michelle Murphy, founder and designer at DEMI RYAN.

'Soft Kitchens are popular now because people are craving comfort and connection. After years of minimalist kitchens that felt a bit sterile, there’s a real desire for spaces that feel personal and lived-in. We’re seeing a shift toward texture, warmth, and character, layers of natural materials that age beautifully, and finishes that invite you in rather than keep you at arm’s length,' she adds.

How to Create a Soft Kitchen

Creating a soft kitchen is easier than you might expect. The features and details you introduce will depend on how much of a refresh you want to give your space, but designers assure it's an easy look to embrace.

'Kitchens have long been the heart of most homes. Given that we spend so much time here, it’s natural we’d want our kitchen to be a delightfully sensorial space that feels as good as it looks. Soft kitchens are warm and wonderfully inviting; they prioritize not only functionality but also the tactile experience of being in the space,' says interior designer Kathy Kuo.

From refined storage styles and freestanding furniture to natural materials and softer accents, here are five easy-to-achieve yet utterly stylish ways to soften your kitchen scheme.

1. Introduce Decorative Open Storage

Creating a soft kitchen starts in the bones of your scheme. Kitchen storage is a huge part of the functionality of your space, so consider how you can make it work harder as a decorative element, too.

'The key is to blend the practicality of a kitchen with the atmosphere of a living space. Open shelving, bookcases, glazed display cabinets, and carefully chosen decorative pieces also help soften the space,' says Tom Wicksteed, co-owner and director at 202 Design.

'Art, collected ceramics, and styled open shelving add soul. We also love bringing in furniture-like islands or vintage pieces to break up the expected cabinetry,' adds Michelle.

2. Decorate with Warm, Natural Materials

Texture and materials play a huge part in a soft kitchen. These small details are what create cozier, more inviting schemes that read more like a living space than a utilitarian one.

'If you love the ambiance of a snug, soft kitchen, choose natural materials that imbue a sense of rustic nostalgia. Opt for the warmth of pieces like a reclaimed wood dining table, antique brass hardware, and textural rattan lampshades,' suggests Kathy.

This kitchen is a charming example, where a warm color palette combines with natural materials through the rattan pendant lights (the Marion Woven Cone Pendant from Pottery Barn is a timeless choice) and the rustic wooden countertop on the kitchen island. These more tactile materials instantly feel soft, inviting, and far from sterile.

We always talk about the effect a well-considered and curated lighting scheme can have on the overall atmosphere in a kitchen, and it's a key element to make your kitchen feel softer. And it's all about layered lighting.

'Bring in warm task lighting with a table lamp on the counter or island, and install dimmer switches (or use dimmable bulbs) so you can control the intensity of the light at any given time. And, of course, decorate with candles liberally (truly, the more candlelight, the better!),' says Kathy.

Take it one step further by introducing tactile materials through your lighting, like in this design. Removing harsher materials that you typically find in a kitchen will also help to create that softer look. For Tom, that means looking towards the utilitarian elements of the design and finding ways of making them softer.

'We are using elements such as decorated extractor housings rather than stainless steel canopies, built-in banquette seating, low-level and accent lighting, and soft furnishings such as armchairs or upholstered seating,' explains Tom.

Swapping colder tones like steel for natural options like wood instantly feels a bit more inviting and softens the kitchen almost instantly. Mixing freestanding furniture into your kitchen also creates a cozier, more lived-in feel, whether it's a freestanding island or a beautiful pantry cupboard to break up the continuous line of built-ins.

The rise of soft kitchens reflects the evolution of our cooking spaces from purely utilitarian to something cozier and more lived-in. It's about embracing natural materials, cozy texture, and warm colors to create a kitchen that becomes an extension of our living spaces.

It's a recurring nightmare of mine before the big day – I've bought an expensive bird, followed the recipe to a T, even invested in the best turkey roasting pan, only to find that in the final moments of the roast, it's not come out as expected. My designer sources tend to be the biggest influence on the trends I report on, so when I spoke with iconic designer Shea McGee about her latest kitchen project (a design itself that sparked the emerging trend for curved silhouettes), I was keen to find out which 2026 kitchen trend she is most excited about.

Three distinct styles are at the top of her list, blending enduring style with endless function and unique design. Here's what she had to say about the trends, and why she thinks they are the ones to consider.

Shea McGee's Favorite 2026 Kitchen Trends

'When it comes to design trends, I always look for what feels timeless, not temporary. I love when a design feels current without chasing what’s in,' says Shea. 'Thoughtful details, quality materials, and livable function will always outlast a trend – but there are a few directions I’m really excited about for the year ahead.'

1. Curved and Sculptural Profiles

Curves, curves, curves. We talked about them in our 2026 kitchen trends forecast, and it's a detail Shea is a particular fan of, demonstrated in her latest kitchen project we recently toured too.

'I love how soft, rounded lines bring elegance and ease to a kitchen. They break up all the straight edges and make the space feel more custom and collected – less modular, more designed,' she explains.

There are so many ways to introduce these more organic silhouettes into your kitchen. Take notes from Shea by softening the edge of your kitchen backsplash, or keep things simple with round lighting or curved furniture – the right bar stool, like McGee & Co.'s Molly Stool, can have more impact than you might think.

2. Material Richness and Layering

White kitchens were once the hallmark of a stylish home, but they have been falling a little bit flat recently. Instead, everyone is craving something warmer, more layered, and characterful. And it's a shift in trends that Shea says is perhaps the most exciting.

'We’re moving away from flat, all-white kitchens to spaces that mix natural woods, patinated metals, textured stones, and soft finishes. It’s about depth, warmth, and character – kitchens that feel lived in, not just styled,' she notes.

A few simple changes can take a white kitchen from stark to stylish. Layer wooden cutting boards as decor and marble accessories on your countertops, introduce shelving in an elegant material with brass brackets, or, if it's in the budget, install a freestanding wooden island at the center of your kitchen.

3. People-Centric Layouts and Gathering Zones

'Kitchens are the true heart of the home. I’m drawn to trends and designs that invite people in – kitchen island ideas that double as homework spaces, storage that supports real life, layouts that make everyday living easy,' Shea explains.

There are so many ways you can implement this trend, whether you're planning a remodel or a simple refresh. Comfortable island seating or the return of eat-in areas are great options, creating a small, cozy seating area for dining, socializing, and even as a homework station.

You might also want to consider dedicated zones or stations to rituals you carry out daily, whether it's a coffee bar, a breakfast prep area, or even storage specifically designed for the produce you grow in your backyard.

It's about creating a kitchen that's tailored to you, works for you, and grows with you. As Shea explains, 'That balance of function and beauty is what keeps a space feeling relevant long after the trend cycle moves on.'

Shea has called it – 2026 is the year or kitchens that are layered and offer bespoke functionality. It's an evolution of the lived-in style that has been rising for a while now, but in a more tailored, personalized way.

Her latest project – a neutral kitchen brimming with thoughtful details – proves that muted tones can be just as striking as bolder palettes. From warm hues to curated textures and layered decor, every element works together to create a space that is both welcoming and effortlessly elegant.

Here’s how Shea McGee and her team at Studio McGee brought this warm, inviting kitchen to life–perfectly in tune with the standout kitchen trends of 2026.

'This project is a full-home remodel of a beautiful heritage property in Maryland – a place with real meaning for the client, since it’s her childhood home. Our goal was to honor the home’s history while making it work for this busy family of five,' Shea explains.

'Before the remodel, the kitchen had all the charm of an older home, but it just didn’t function for the way this family lives now. The kitchen layout had flow constraints typical of legacy homes. With three young boys, the client's main concern was making the kitchen feel both beautiful and truly functional,' she continues.

Despite the good bones of the kitchen, this project required more than just a simple refresh to create an elevated design that offered practical storage and a better flow that worked for the whole family.

Style was still a priority, and Shea embraced the look her firm, Studio McGee, is renowned for. 'In terms of style, we leaned into our signature New Heritage aesthetic – classic, collected, comfortable – and made sure the architecture felt grounded and livable.'

Now, the kitchen is a space that imbues warmth and feels artfully layered. It's pared back in all the right places, allowing the subtle details and charming textures to have their moment.

'It feels timeless yet tailored – rooted in tradition but designed for everyday life. The aesthetic is clean and fresh but layered with warmth and detail, so it doesn’t feel one-note,' says Shea.

'The whites are crisp, the wood island brings in a soft natural tone, and the architectural features (like curves) give it that custom, thoughtful feel rather than a standard fit-out. We wanted the kitchen to feel like it belongs in this heritage home, but also reflects the family that lives there today.'

Curved silhouettes are present throughout the design, from the kitchen backsplash edge to the lighting, and even the charming oval window in the corner of the room. These subtle details remove the sharpness typical of kitchen materials.

'We chose curved forms because they quietly soften the space – especially important in a kitchen where there are so many hard surfaces and straight lines. Curves help the eye move naturally around the room and avoid that feeling of just cabinetry and counters,' she explains.

'We added an arched hood over the stove and continued the curved theme in the backsplash to elevate what could’ve been a very standard white kitchen. It makes the space feel more bespoke, more intentional, and much more inviting. The oval window is so simple, but it’s smart: it brings in light, adds architectural interest, and addresses an asymmetrical kitchen layout. It solves a problem and adds beauty.'

These curvaceous forms are a big kitchen trend for 2026, and this design makes it clear why. The softness they add and the interest they create give even the most neutral kitchens depth and interest. And it's a trend that Shea is enjoying.

'I’m a big fan of how they bring character,' she says. 'But what I’m even more excited about is how curves pair with material richness and layering. When you marry a curved island or arch with warm woods, subtle metals, matte stone, and real texture – that’s where the magic happens. A trend isn’t just a shape; it’s how you integrate shape, finish, and flow.'

There's a real sense of coziness to this kitchen. The curves combined with the natural textures and the warming color palette have created a truly inviting atmosphere – something we have all come to crave as of late.

'We wanted a palette that would stand the test of time – something rooted and warm, not fleeting,' says Shea, choosing Steamed Milk by Sherwin‑Williams for the cabinets, West Highland White by Sherwin-Williams for the walls, and a warm, natural wood tone for the kitchen island.

'Natural materials and finishes were key, like the wood, brass, aged metal hardware, and softer textures in the adjoining zones. We integrated architectural character so the kitchen didn’t feel too new. The oval window balances an asymmetrical layout and adds a tailored detail,' she explains.

But above all, the design is so successful because it works for the homeowners' daily lives. It's tailored to their needs and expertly blends style and function, like the ease of flow around the island into the adjoining pantry and the carefully considered kitchen storage ideas.

'Most importantly, we designed for how the family lives: an island as a gathering spot, comfortable flow, storage that works – so every time someone enters the kitchen, it feels comfortable, not just styled,' says Shea.

'Without good function, even the most beautiful kitchen falls flat. We redesigned walls, optimized flow, and made sure it worked for daily living. Those details really matter.'

However, Shea's recent kitchen project is a reminder that neutrals are timeless, and layered with texture and shape, they can be every bit as interesting as choosing a bolder scheme.

It's incredibly valuable to look back and reflect on the styles that once proved most popular and rediscover the designs we marveled over that still feel fresh and totally timeless today. There are so many lessons and ideas we can still take from them.

And as I flicked through the house tours of past issues, I was drawn to the warm, welcoming kitchens that invite you in, feel comfortably elevated, and embody an enduring style. And for me, they are the recipe for the perfect cozy kitchen.

The darker wood tones and the heritage features of Craftsman kitchens always invoke a cozier atmosphere, and this Craftsman-style home by Heidi Caillier is a case in point. The kitchen is filled with wood tones – both light and dark – soft textures through the cafe curtains and rug, and vintage-inspired motifs.

A kitchen filled with dark wood tones can easily feel gloomy, but this space proves that with the right mix of colors, tones, and materials, it can be a bright and inviting scheme. And during the redesign, adding the island and updating the lighting made a huge difference to both the style and function of the space.

'It felt like such a big, empty room without an island to anchor it. I also wanted it to be something different than the cabinets so that it felt like it was added to over time,' explains designer Heidi Caillier.

'Wood cabinets, when done right, can really make a kitchen feel warm. Kitchens are normally all hard finishes, so the wood goes a long way to bringing in that organic element. We often do wood countertops for this reason. The handmade tile also brings an element of interest that draws you in,' she explains.

The open storage throughout the kitchen, from the shelves to the island, creates a lived-in look that instantly feels less formal and fussy, while collected vessels in various designs filled with fresh fruit and seasonal blooms add a sense of personality to the space.

For Heidi, the kitchen lighting is a true success story in the space. 'I love small-scale pendants over a kitchen island. I don't like big statement pendants. These feel functional and charming and are the perfect touch for this space.'

Playful Style Meets Traditional Design

Part of the renovation of this period property, this characterful kitchen was designed by Emma Ainscough in collaboration with deVOL Kitchens and created a warm and inviting hub in the home. From the charming colors to the collected decor, it's a space we always return to.

'We designed this kitchen from scratch. It was previously located on the lower ground floor, but the house hadn’t been touched for decades, so the kitchen location felt a bit stuck in the past. Our clients wanted the kitchen to be at the heart of the home, so we promoted it to these high-ceilinged, grander-proportioned walls of the raised ground floor,' Emma recalls.

'With kitchens, I always try to ensure that they don’t feel too clinical. This was particularly important with this kitchen to honor its home and architecture, and with it being in the heart of the home on the ground floor, it was important that it felt homely with the rest of the space.'

'To achieve this, we ensured there wasn’t too much full height joinery – we broke this up with low cabinets only, and put the sink in front of the large window overlooking to garden to frame that lovely green view. We also used a combination of different lighting, some quite atmospheric in order to zone the different spaces, and importantly used some antique pendants to soften all the ’new’ that you typically require in a kitchen,' she explains.

'We also played around with materials, using a marble countertop with plenty of strong veining in, accompanied by handmade Moroccan zellige tiles, which add a certain tactility to the space. I think tiles can be really impactful and change the whole feel of a kitchen depending on what you go for.'

'Zellige tiles are all hand-made with beautiful ‘imperfections’ which instantly soften that clinical feel that a kitchen can be at risk of feeling. Also, color – play around with tones, it doesn’t have to be bold tones to make an impact, often soft palettes are more livable, and this soft pink tone contrasts the heavy joinery to further soften the space.'

Moody Color and Statement Marble Combine

Decorating with moody colors is a wonderful way to add warmth and drama all in one sweep. But when we toured with a refined and eclectic Sydney apartment, the kitchen (which we all adored then, and still do now) was well ahead of its time.

Located in a relatively new building, the space was the perfect blank canvas to personalize and elevate to be something more statement. And the kitchen was the perfect place to start.

'We completely opened the space up to the hall and into the dining room to make it feel much more spacious and inviting,' says interior designer Tamsin Johnson, who created a more open feel and better flow in the space, connecting the rooms in a way that makes more sense.

From there, the design focused on textures. The dark wooden floor grounds the room more traditionally and adds to that moodier atmosphere, creating an inviting and all-encompassing scheme.

On the paneled cabinetry and island, color became the star of the show. The deep, burnt red hue feels warm and daring, without overwhelming the space. 'The colors are warm and contrast with the bold stone, creating a lovely little clash of activity,' Tamsin adds.

The Calacatta Viola marble is a beautiful addition – marble countertops and accents are a timeless choice, and the bold veining creates a striking contrast against the softer tones in the space. Silver faucets fade into the background, removing that utilitarian look that can so easily take away from the ease and comfort this space evokes.

A Blend Of Rustic Farmhouse and Countryside Chic

Modern farmhouse kitchens may have fallen somewhat out of favor, but the more classic, more rustic iterations never will. It's a style that's humble, layered, and in the case of the kitchen in this contemporary farmhouse, quietly elegant.

'The previous kitchen was very modern and didn't work well at all with the heritage of the house. We designed a more traditional shaker kitchen with a large butler sink, which was much more fitting to the architecture and period of the house,' explains designer Angus Reid.

'The Calacatta Borghini marble plays a major role here. The kitchen island is huge, and there is a lot of work surface space. So it was important we chose a stone with warm tones. The Borghini has lovely warm veining throughout, which is subtle but adds interest,' he adds.

'The cabinetry was painted in a warm stone color. Whilst the color is neutral, it adds warmth to the space. We used reclaimed Delft tiles, which had the perfect amount of imperfections!

Layering and texture come into their own in this kitchen. The stone floor tiles feel perfectly imperfect, as though they've been imprinted by history; the zellige backsplash tiles' irregular form bounces light most uniquely, and wooden ceiling beams add further warmth and character.

And then there's the decor that creates interest and personality, from the single open shelf reserved purely for accessories, the garden trug basket filled with foraged foliage, and a vintage lamp to add ambient lighting on gloomy evenings. It's these small details that signal this kitchen is lived-in and loved.

Coastal Color Blends with Classic Heritage

When the homeowners moved into this townhouse, the proportions were all off. It was dark and uninviting, and the compact galley kitchen didn't function for family life. That was when interior designer Laura Stephens was called in to transform the space into something far more warm and welcoming.

'We flipped the kitchen from the back of the house to the middle room, where we feel it has made a huge difference in terms of the space. We added an internal window above the sink to let light flow into this darker back room,' Laura recalls.

The kitchen cabinet color is a beautiful element, which helps to brighten and invigorate the space without feeling stark or too bold. This, combined with the natural tones and textures throughout the space, offers a subtle nod to enduring stylish coastal kitchens.

'The elements of wood are essential in adding a sense of warmth to the space. The wooden flooring, but also the dark oak wall cabinets and shelf. I love using rugs in areas where there are lots of hard surfaces,' she explains.

'We used wall lights with fabric shades (which people are often worried about, but in fact really helps to create coziness in kitchen spaces), which is a great way to inject a little color and pattern. Think about using a sisal rug or runner, a more practical option than wool, but one that will help break up expanses of flooring.'

Personalized Decor Pairs with Classic Design

Located in a large Edwardian home, this kitchen needed to be layered and relaxed, not at all boring, yet still functional for everyday family life. And it was a task entrusted to Tiffany Duggan, founder of the London-based design firm Studio Duggan.

And she's transformed the space into an elegantly playful design, where emerald green cabinets, marble countertops, and brass accents combine. And the kitchen layout, complete with one row of wall cabinets, a large island, and a spacious dining area, ticks the boxes for relaxed and functional style.

But the layering really comes through from the decor and how it's been styled. Glass-fronted cabinets give everyday kitchenware and a more styled feel, while open shelving creates a designated place to display arts and decorative mugs that offer a preview into the lives and personalities of those who live there.

And the lighting has been layered to perfection, adding to the warmth and coziness of the design. Rattan sconces above the shelving doubles as a decorative feature and task lighting over the kitchen countertops, while globe pendants above the island offer focused illumination, while also helping to create a sense of separation from the dining area.

But it's the wood tones that really complete the design, and add that natural warmth and texture. The large dining table is the most obvious, a richly toned wood that gains a beautiful patina over time. But in the main kitchen, smaller accents like the rattan light shades and the layered cutting boards tie the whole scheme together.

Everything about this kitchen still feels in style today. From the classic color palette to the organic materials and layered features, it embodies warmth and coziness in the most playfully sophisticated way.

And designer Sophie Garland's cozy cottage, which dates back to the 1600s, is proof of just how charming these spaces can be when decked out for Christmas. But it's more than just a few festive decorations that make it so compelling.

In fact, this cozy kitchen is a lesson in designing around period features, low ceilings, and quirky layouts. With a thoughtful approach to design and decor, it's become the most inviting, warming space – perfect for the holiday celebrations and beyond.

For interior designer Sophie Garland, this ancient home was a labor of love. Pre-renovation, the home, which was originally two separate cottages, was tired and in need of some joy and character being reinjected.

'The kitchen had a similar layout before, but it definitely felt like more could be done to make it feel spacious and cohesive. There were lots of bulky high-level cabinets, which I replaced with open shelving – this immediately made the room feel lighter and more open,' Sophie recalls.

'Another big change was adding a full-height pantry cupboard in what had been an empty, unused corner. Wanting it to feel distinct from the rest of the kitchen cabinetry, I used one of the old doors we’d removed from another part of the house. Although it’s just a cupboard, it now gives the illusion of a larger space beyond.'

Reuse and repurpose was an ethos Sophie embraced throughout the kitchen project. She tried to keep and uplift as many features as she could, whether it was repurposing doors from other parts of the house or breathing new life into old cabinets.

'I didn’t want to replace the remaining cabinets as they were in good condition, so I repainted them in Farrow & Ball’s Pointing and replaced the handles with slightly more modern, simple antique brass ones. I also integrated all of the appliances so the fridge and dishwasher now sit discreetly behind cabinet doors,' she explains.

These thoughtful updates, swaps, and new features have completely transformed the kitchen into the coziest space, filled with color, warmth, and timeless decor features that feel equal parts stylish and personalized.

'The style of the cottage now is definitely one full of color and pattern! It has the charm of an old country kitchen but with a touch of youth and fun! It feels lighter and airier thanks to the softer colors and the choice of furniture,' Sophie describes.

A kitchen with low ceilings can be difficult to design – you still require adequate storage, but upper cabinets can leave the space feeling overcrowded and dark, a problem Sophie overcame by introducing open shelving instead. But color was also important here.

'The low ceiling and dark beams were the biggest challenge, as I really didn’t want the room to feel gloomy. I chose Pink Ground by Farrow & Ball for the walls – it’s a warm pink that still feels fresh and uplifting. To balance the dark beams, I brought in a large pale soaped oak table from the Danish furniture company Carl Hansen, which adds lightness and contrast to the space,' she explains.

Not only was the color choice important for creating that bright, open feel to contrast the darker wood tones, but it also contributed to the warm, cozy atmosphere Sophie has created.

'The warmth of the wall color, paired with the pale cabinetry and antique brass hardware, really helped to create that cozy feeling. The pleated linen curtains and roman blinds add softness and a classic cottage feel, while the large Aga at the center gives an instant sense of warmth and comfort.'

There's a layered approach to decor here that adds to the comforting atmosphere. 'The starting point was the curtain and blind fabric, a beautiful green botanical print by Josef Frank. I’d been wanting to use it for ages, and this room, surrounded by garden views, was the perfect spot. The fabric has a modern edge, which works really well against the older, more traditional elements in the space,' she explains.

'I added antique pieces, like a dark wooden table that now serves as the bar, which I found locally. On top sits one of my favourite finds, a silver antique tray on lion’s feet from Portobello Market. There’s a real mix of old and new, which makes the room feel as though it’s evolved. It was important to lean into the cottage’s original charm with antiques, but balance that with modern touches so it didn’t feel too formal or stuffy.'

To contrast with the pink walls and the white cabinetry, Sophie painted the vintage dining chairs in Puck by Little Greene. 'It’s a dark green but with a wonderful brightness, and the eggshell finish reflects the light beautifully. I kept the original wall lights but painted them in Incarnadine by Farrow & Ball, a favourite red of mine that adds a cheerful injection of color,' she adds.

But for Sophie, it's the home bar that truly stands out in the space, creating the perfect hosting nook, especially for the holidays. 'We turned the old fireplace, which had already been removed, into a bar area. It’s a fun addition and a great way to make use of what was quite a cavernous space.'

All of these design features combined are what make this kitchen feel so warm, inviting, and cozy. And Sophie's advice for creating the coziest kitchen?

'Treat it like another living space. Layer your lighting with ceiling and wall lights, table lamps, and add candle sconces if you can. Curtains and blinds really help soften the harder surfaces, and seat cushions are a lovely way to introduce extra fabrics and warmth.'

From large Bundt cake forms to smaller jelly shapers, copper molds were once a staple in every kitchen and pantry. Over time, they have fallen out of use as cooking styles evolved, but they are now returning as decorative pieces, and we can't get enough of their charming aesthetic, whether they are antique or newly made in a traditional style.

'They are a simple yet functional decorative tool, which I believe is the very best kind. Their function is to make delicious, perfectly cooked cakes, but when they are not in use, they serve as beautiful decorative pieces, adding warmth and a soulful quality to a kitchen,' says Nina Plummer, founder of Ellei Home.

'They add warmth through the color of copper and a wonderful lived-in feel with time and use as the aging copper acquires its patina,' she explains of their enduring appeal and ability to work seamlessly in a variety of schemes.

While you might think a traditional kitchenware item like this would only suit an equally traditional kitchen, copper molds of every age and size are just as much of a welcome addition to a modern kitchen.

'I have a bit of an antique shopping addiction, so even though this house was a brand new build, I was determined to give it some old-soul charm. The copper molds were one of my favorite finds, and hanging them on the wall instantly made the kitchen feel like it had a story to tell,' says Michelle Dudley, who has decorated her space with a collection of copper molds, shown above.

Decorating with copper molds isn't just some fleeting kitchen trend – it's a shift that reflects the way we are prioritizing quality and wellbeing over cheap and easy. And there are so many beautiful ways to display copper molds, alongside other decor and utensils. 'Copper pans and molds hanging from a pot rack look good, they are practical and last forever, there is nothing to go out of fashion or need replacing,' says Helen.

'They look great hung up on the wall, which is also the traditional way of displaying them,' Nina agrees. 'But I think they also look really lovely on open shelving.' They are also beautiful hung from a pot rack suspended from the ceiling, or even as an unexpected gallery wall.

Where to Buy Copper Molds

There are plenty of places to shop for copper molds, whether you want to buy beautifully patinated antique examples or newer designs that will age with you and your family. It's all about looking in the right places.

'I offer three different copper molds in my shop, Ellei Home, all of exceptional quality and made entirely by hand in the northern Italian mountains by three generations of copper craftsmen working side by side. I also frequently spot vintage ones during my buying trips at antiques fairs and markets,' says Nina.

Your local antique stores, vintage fairs, and even thrift stores are great places to look for antique molds, but you can also find plenty of examples online. Here are a few worth buying.

There's something so timeless about them, yet in a recent Zillow 2026 trends report that highlights what buyers are looking for (and not looking for) in new homes, it was noted that the desire for marble sinks is in decline due to their high-maintenance nature. But does this really mean they are on the outs, or is it still a look people love?

Some of the most beautiful designs I've seen feature a kitchen sink made from this elegant material, so I turned to interior designers to find out if marble basins are truly going out of style. Here's what they had to say.

Are Marble Sinks Going Out of Style?

The new Zillow report said that 'marble sinks, down 15%, are also losing ground. While undeniably beautiful, marble sinks are high-maintenance and prone to staining, making them less practical for busy households.'

And while it's understandable that people might be gravitating away from the expense and maintenance of a marble sink, I'm not entirely convinced they are going out of style. And it turns out, designers agree.

'Marble sinks remain timeless in style. Their natural veining and organic movement bring an effortless sense of elegance that few materials can replicate,' says interior designer Marie Flanigan.

'Marble has a quiet luxury that feels both classic and contemporary, depending on how it’s paired with surrounding finishes. It’s a design choice that speaks to craftsmanship and the beauty of natural materials, which never truly go out of fashion.'

It's the timelessness of marble that makes it eternally in style, whether it's kitchen countertops or a striking sink design. It stands the test of time in a way that's incomparable to any other material.

'I think marble is one of the most timeless materials you can use, and because of that, almost anything made from it will stand the test of time and always look beautiful. Marble sinks are no exception,' says Drew Michael Scott of Lone Fox.

'While they’ve definitely had a moment over the past five years or so, I don’t see them looking dated anytime soon. Whether you craft a rectangular sink from marble, like I did in my kitchen, or use an antique reclaimed Turkish bathhouse sink, like the ones from Olive Ateliers, marble adds a depth of texture you simply can’t get from a traditional porcelain sink,' he explains.

And if you are going to believe anyone about the beauty and timeless appeal of a marble sink, it's the people who have and use them daily. And Drew Michael Scott isn't the only one who chose a marble design for their kitchen and has zero regrets.

'The virtues of marble sinks are, in my opinion, endless. Pure natural beauty that is ageless and practical beyond measure. A contradictory statement, I imagine, as there are two types of people in the world, those that love age, patina, history, and elegance, and those that prefer something more reliably neat and tidy and practical,' says Helen Parker, creative director at deVOL Kitchens.

'I am in the first camp and cannot think of anything more beautiful than an aged marble sink. I have one in my kitchen, and it has so far not got a scratch or dent or mark, so as far as I am concerned, they are also practical, but I do like things to be a little faded in their glamour,' she explains.

'I got my marble sink on a whim. I never knew how much joy it would bring me and how little I would worry about it. It turned out to be the most important and pivotal decision in my kitchen, and matched with a marble chequered floor, it is my pride and joy!'

How to Care for a Marble Sink

One of the reasons Zillow reported the decline in marble sinks is due to their high maintenance and stain-prone properties. There's no denying that it is a more porous, fragile stone, but there are plenty of ways you can look after a marble sink.

'Marble is a natural material that rewards care and attention. To maintain its beauty, it’s important to seal the surface regularly and avoid harsh cleaners that can etch or dull the finish,' explains Marie.

'I recommend wiping spills quickly, especially from acidic substances like citrus or wine. With gentle maintenance, marble develops a lovely patina that tells the story of a well-loved home,' she adds.

The type of marble you choose is also important, as they have different natures and levels of care. 'I don’t mind if my house looks a little lived-in, so I’m not too finicky about keeping everything in perfect condition. I wish I had a great sealer recommendation, but to be honest, in the three years I’ve had my sink, I haven’t resealed it since my fabricator did after installation,' Drew Michael Scott notes.

'That said, I think two things have really helped my sink age gracefully. First, the type of marble I chose, Calacatta Viola, has lots of natural variation, so any stains blend right into the veining and aren’t very noticeable,' he explains.

'Second, my installer used a type of sealer called an ager, which soaks into the marble, enhances the color, and adds a bit of protection. It slightly darkens the surface, which actually helps prevent new stains from setting in. This has definitely helped my countertops and sink hold up to everyday wear and tear.'

It's also worth considering the features you add to a marble sink, and how they can compromise the stone's structure and stability.

'Avoid installing a waste disposal, which can increase the risk of staining from food waste,' says Tom Wicksteed, co-owner and director at 202 Design. 'Routine cleaning with gentle, pH-neutral products will help maintain the surface, but some marks over time are inevitable – and part of marble’s natural character.'

What Sink Material Can You Choose Instead?

Even though marble sinks are a look that's here to stay, they aren't for everyone. The good news, though, is that there are plenty of other kitchen sink materials and styles that remain timeless, but are usually more affordable and durable.

'There’s a reason porcelain sinks are the standard! They’re affordable, easy to install, low-maintenance, and simple to clean. But they can also be a little boring and sometimes look generic,' says Drew Michael Scott.

'I’ve seen porcelain sinks in colors other than white, and those can be really beautiful. I know Kohler has a sage green option that’s so unique and eye-catching. That would be my top suggestion for my clean freaks who are ready to move on from plain white sinks,' he suggests as a more exciting alternative.

He continues: 'If you’re looking for something different, a concrete sink, an enameled cast iron sink, or a stainless steel sink are great alternatives to porcelain that aren’t too difficult to maintain.'

If you love the look of marble, but simply can't keep up with the maintenance of a sink in the material, there are plenty of other ways you can introduce that same sense of luxury while still considering your functional needs.

'Even if marble isn’t suitable for the main sink, it can still be incorporated strategically. A marble sink for a front-of-house kitchen or a prep sink on an island allows you to enjoy its visual impact without compromising practicality. This approach lets you retain the sense of a high-end, considered finish while keeping the most-used areas more resilient,' explains Tom.

'If a marble sink stresses you out, do a beautiful marble countertop with a porcelain sink in a color more tonal with the countertops! Any other material, like copper or brass, is going to give you just as much or more trouble than marble will,' Drew Michael Scott adds.

Designers have called it – marble sinks are here to stay. They're a timeless choice, and while they do not suit everybody's lifestyle, they will always be in style and have a place in kitchen design. And it's all thanks to the elegant beauty of this natural stone.

'The appeal of marble sinks lies in their individuality and sophistication. No two slabs are the same, which means each sink becomes a one-of-a-kind statement piece,' says Marie Flanigan. 'The stone’s subtle color variations and tactile quality elevate even the simplest spaces. It’s a material that instantly adds warmth and depth – refined yet inviting.'

But it's not quite as simple as adding a pretty light to your kitchen – embracing the countertop lamp trend requires a considered balance of style and function. From the size of the lamp to the material it's made from, there are a few things you might not have thought to consider that are quite important.

So, if you want to avoid an all too common kitchen lighting mistake, take note. These are the three things experts say you should avoid when choosing a lamp for your kitchen.

3 Things to Avoid When Introducing a Kitchen Countertop Lamp

The countertop lamp you choose for your kitchen will depend entirely on what you are using it for. If it's purely a decorative feature on a large island or side table, you can probably get away with any design. But if it's for task lighting and ambiance on your countertops, these are the things to avoid.

1. A Long Cord

Every kitchen holds countertop appliances in some capacity, whether it's a kettle and toaster or a coffee machine. Which means cords. And lots of them. To cut down on the number of wires covering your surfaces and the number of outlets being used, it's best to avoid a plug-in lamp and opt for something cordless instead.

'Cordless is always best; no one needs trailing cables on kitchen counters,' says Jo Plant, chief creative director at Pooky, who says that portable designs are far more useful. You can move them around depending on where you need them, and you can quickly get them out of the way in busy periods.

The market for cordless lamps has really evolved, with a mix of rechargeable and battery-powered lamps on offer. And you can find some truly chic designs that are perfect for kitchens, like the Hive Cordless Table Lamp from Pooky and this Dimmable Brass Table Lamp from Walmart.

2. Materials That are Difficult to Clean

As much as kitchens deserve to be as beautiful and curated as our bedrooms and living spaces, it's still a very functional room. As such, food splatters and marks from heavy-duty cleaners are a risk for your countertop lamp, so choosing hard-wearing materials is key.

'I wouldn’t suggest plain silk or card lampshades in a kitchen, as if they catch an accidental splash, it will be very hard to disguise. Patterned gathered shades in cotton and linen are more forgiving, or a rattan shade is a great option – the choices are endless,' says Jo.

It's also best to avoid any lamps where the base is covered in a softer material, too, as it will quickly end up damaged and looking worn out. 'If your counter is a busy and creative (I would never say messy) space, then a metal shade and base combo would be a good choice, as accidental splashes or spills can be dealt with easily,' she suggests.

3. An Oversized Lamp Shade

In a kitchen, avoid introducing a table lamp with an oversized lampshade. It not only takes up more space, but it can also cause a visual imbalance and, in some cases, it won't fit seamlessly below cabinets or alongside other essentials.

Instead, scale down the lamp shade (our Style Editor shared some chic lampshade swaps for winter) and play with the height of your lighting to best suit your space. For some people, opting for something tall and thin is the best fit – the Ronnie Wireless Touch Metal Table Lamp from Pottery Barn is a perfect example.

'If you are adding a lamp for task lighting, then I’d choose a slightly taller, brighter light with a dimming function so when you’ve finished using your light for cooking, prepping, or reading, you can dim it down for an instant change of atmosphere,' says Jo, who recommends Pooky's Twinky Cordless Lamps.

Kitchen lighting is all about layering – varied light sources provide different types of illumination and atmosphere, and lamps are key to this, as long as you avoid these mistakes. And as Jo says, 'our kitchens are multi-functional spaces these days, and if you’re adding a countertop lamp, then it’s great for it to be as versatile as your kitchen.'

If you really want to create a kitchen with storage that is tailored to your lifestyle and needs, custom cabinetry is the answer that designers always suggest.

'The kitchen is one of the most used spaces in a home, and well-designed cabinets make all the difference. Investing in custom cabinetry allows us to maximize both function and beauty. Very early in a project, we plan out exactly what will live behind every door and drawer so the final space is highly efficient, intuitive, and tailored to the homeowner’s lifestyle,' says Lucy Hund, design director at MDI Luxury Design.

Interior designer Marie Flanigan agrees, adding 'I always recommend investing in custom millwork – it’s the true workhorse of the kitchen. Custom cabinetry not only maximizes storage and function but also allows you to tailor every detail to your lifestyle, from drawer organization to hidden appliance panels.'

While there is an additional cost associated with custom cabinets, it allows you to be really tailored and intentional about your storage and layout. It allows you to carve out a dedicated coffee station, drawers dedicated to produce, and organizers that perfectly fit your favorite knives.

When the millwork feels authentic to the bones of the house – whether traditional, modern, or somewhere in between – it naturally becomes timeless,' says Marie.

And for a truly elevated design, Lucy recommends 'take the cabinetry all the way to the ceiling and wrap it with the home’s crown molding.' It's those small but impactful details that make all the difference.

It's an opportunity to 'maximize otherwise dead space for thoughtful details that help maximize functionality,' says designer Allison Lind, who designed the kitchen above.

In this project, there was some under-utilized space below the window, which she reimagined as a charming cup niche for morning rituals. 'By simply taking over some space below an existing window niche, we turned what would have been a blank wall into a cute little coffee-mug shelf and turned the otherwise basic window ledge into a coffee station,' she explains.

'By utilizing the same material as the cabinetry, it feels extra custom and special, although it was such a simple add,' she recalls. It's a small detail, but one that instantly improves and elevates an everyday routine while keeping the countertops clutter-free.

'Custom lighting anchors the entire space,' adds Caroline Danielson of Ferguson Home. 'Whether through pendants or a layered scheme, it adds depth and dimension. It’s the signature that defines the mood and directs the eye - announcing you’ve entered somewhere special before a word is spoken.'

A good way to approach it is through the kitchen lighting rule of three. 'Layer ambient, task, and accent lighting so that each source serves a purpose, guiding movement, mood, and focus with intention. Every element should earn its place, aligning glow, clarity, and emphasis with architectural precision,' says Caroline.

'A lighting plan should honor the architecture of the space while enhancing the rhythm of how it’s used. Think sculptural pendants over the island to ground the space, or add integrated task lighting tucked under upper cabinets for clarity while prepping,' Jordan explains.

'You can even add sconces that frame a range so it feels more like a dining room than a utilitarian space. Bottom line: when it’s done right, lighting moves with you. It wakes up with your first cup of coffee, and sets the mood just right when that first cork of a deep Napa red pops open after work.'

This elegant kitchen embraces two of this year's biggest color trends – and it proves a sophisticated space can be born from the boldest shades if you know how to pair them. Here's everything you need to know about this historic remodel, and a lesson in decorating with these eye-catching colors.

'Raynham Hall is a Grade I listed house of national historic importance, which means that many of its interiors have remained largely unchanged since the 1700s,' says Francesca Froggatt, head kitchen designer at deVOL Kitchens, who was in charge of transforming the space into a family kitchen for owners Octavia, Tom, and their children.

This was a particularly unique project – the kitchen before the remodel had been an occasional function room, so the design team was really starting from scratch with the style and layout of the space. But as this property is a listed building, it came with a long list of restrictions.

'The decoration is part of the listing, meaning every surface, including the intricate gilding, ornate carvings, grand fireplaces, and wall paintings, had to remain untouched,' Francesca explains.

'The green on the walls is believed to be the original paint color, and part of the project involved careful restoration rather than redesign. In essence, very little changed visually; the transformation was all about reintroducing a sense of purpose and warmth to a room that had been more ceremonial than lived in for many years.'

Though the green wall paint is an original feature, it required some gentle restoration, so they collaborated with the expert team at Edward Bulmer Paint to help ensure it remained historically accurate. From there, they could start to think about the complementary colors to introduce.

'With such a powerful backdrop, we knew the cabinetry needed real presence to hold its own within the room. Octavia and Tom chose deVOL’s Refectory Red for the furniture, a deep red that adds warmth and weight without competing with the historic decoration. The combination feels both bold and harmonious, bridging the old and the new in a way that feels completely natural within the setting,' she explains.

'Color plays a huge role in shaping the feel of such an immense space. The rich green walls and deep red cabinetry together create a sense of warmth and intimacy, drawing the eye in and helping to soften the formality of the room. Despite the scale, the kitchen now feels inviting and comfortable, a space where you can imagine cooking, chatting, and spending time together.'

And the restrictions didn't stop at the walls. The cabinetry is undeniably perfect for the style and scale of the room, but that isn't the only reason they chose this look – they had to select cabinets and appliances that didn't need to be fixed to the walls.

'Because the house is listed, we could not fix or attach anything to the original woodwork or stone. Every piece of cabinetry had to be designed to sit sympathetically within the room without disturbing its historic fabric,' Francesca recalls, adding that furniture could only be attached to the floors, and because services also had to be brought in through the floorboards, they were really restricted on the kitchen layout.

'Octavia and Tom were incredibly understanding of these limitations; they chose to keep their large fridge and freezer in the adjoining pantry, which allowed the main kitchen to remain low-level and unobtrusive. This meant the furniture could sit quietly alongside the room’s decorative features, such as the gilded carvings, paintings, and enormous windows, complementing rather than competing with them,' she says.

'With much of the wall space occupied by listed decorative features, there was only one practical area for full-height cabinetry. We used that for a large freestanding breakfast cupboard, while the fridge, freezer, and most of the pantry storage were moved to the adjoining room. The result is a layout that feels intentionally minimal and elegant, giving the historic detailing room to breathe.'

This kitchen really is a masterclass in designing a beautiful kitchen in a historic home. There's an artful balance here – the decadence and grandeur of the room is levelled by the simplicity of the furniture and cabinetry.

'It would have been easy to lean into the decorative grandeur of the room and design something ornate, but that would have risked overwhelming the space. Octavia and Tom were keen to keep the furniture clean, simple, and timeless, pieces that felt as though they could always have been there,' says Francesca.

'The Shaker cabinet design, painted in rich tones, brings a sense of functionality and calm to the room, providing balance against the opulence of the surroundings. The result feels authentic and quietly respectful; a kitchen that works beautifully for modern family life while sitting perfectly within the history and character of Raynham Hall.'

In many ways, it's a kitchen that doesn't look like a kitchen. The minimal approach to cabinetry, the hidden appliances, and emphasis on freestanding furniture feel inviting and far from utilitarian. Even the round dining table surrounded by antique chairs feels cozier and more curated than your usual seating area.

And kitchen lighting plays a huge role, especially when it comes to creating a more inviting atmosphere, from the large windows to the fixtures introduced. 'The challenge was to make such a vast, formal space feel welcoming and lived in again,' says Francesca.

'By introducing warm tones, carefully considered furniture placement, and beautiful lighting, we helped to bring the scale down and make it feel more intimate; a room the family could truly enjoy day to day, rather than admire from afar.'

What's Been Your Favourite Kitchen You've Ever Designed and Why?

'My favourite kitchen I’ve designed has to be our Kensington kitchen. The project was part of a major two-year refurbishment of a stunning seven-floor Kensington home. The client wanted a space that reflected her ‘Australian Scandi’ aesthetic – combining the clean simplicity of Scandinavian design with the warmth of her Australian roots. Designing furniture that captured this balance was an exciting challenge that I thoroughly enjoyed.

To achieve the look, I used natural and painted oak for the cabinetry, keeping the space light and fresh. The pale oak was carefully book-matched on the drawers of the hob run and island, while the full-height cupboards were painted white to ensure they didn’t dominate the room. Fluted oak panels added texture to the island and the base of the breakfast bar, and for a touch of drama, I incorporated a Statuario marble worktop that cascades in a waterfall effect.'

'Attention to detail was key. I used patinated brass for the handcrafted handles, kickplates, and trim on the extractor hood, tying everything together with a refined, understated elegance. A standout feature is the sculptural hanging rack over the island, suspended from a curved, backlit ceiling section. It serves as both a functional storage solution and a striking focal point, perfect for task lighting and displaying trailing plants.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this kitchen is incredibly practical. Clever storage solutions keep it beautifully clutter-free, with features like a concealed pantry that also hides the microwave. The fluted oak detailing extends beyond the kitchen into the dining area and TV snug, creating a seamless flow throughout the space.

This kitchen is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can merge style and function, and it remains one of my proudest projects.'

What Defines a Luxury Kitchen Today?

‘Where once a luxury kitchen was defined solely by high-end materials and money-no-object fixtures, the definition has evolved. It may still showcase unique finishes, but today a luxury kitchen anticipates and surpasses the client’s every expectation. It meets every requirement they’ve imagined – and even those they didn’t know they had. This is the role of a bespoke kitchen designer: to explore every nuance of a client’s brief, uncover the heart of their desires, and translate it into a kitchen that is truly, unmistakably luxurious.’

How Has Your Ledbury Shaker Kitchen Evolved?

'Design shouldn’t stand still. The essence of design is to present something new and offer an alternative way of seeing things. I believe in staying open to new ideas and constantly evolving. With the Shaker kitchen, I took all the traditional elements and then added contemporary touches, such as variations on the frame and panel sizes of the doors, adding an oversized contemporary cornice and modern cast handles in aged and patinated brass.'

You’ve Been a Huge Proponent of the Classic Marquetry Design. What Does That Involve?

'Marquetry is the art of applying veneer pieces to furniture to form decorative patterns or designs. Staying true to Ledbury Studio’s signature aesthetic, our Marquetry Collection is a contemporary take on this traditional craft. For instance, in the Weybridge kitchen, the directional veneers were applied by hand to form a decorative pattern, inlaid with aged bronze, with bespoke handles in aged bronze to finish the look.'

What Materials and Finishes Do You Love to Use in a Kitchen?

'Metal adds sophistication and depth, qualities few other materials can match. At Ledbury Studio, we focus on real metals like copper, pewter, zinc and bronze, which bring an authenticity that painted metallic finishes on wood simply can’t replicate. The result is a refined, high-end aesthetic that elevates the space.

We’ve pioneered ways to use metals in door fronts, islands and bespoke cabinetry. Metal’s versatility allows us to age, texture, or patinate it, creating unique finishes. We’ve also explored liquid metal techniques like pewter shagreen and bronze inlays to add intricate detailing to surfaces.'

''Living metals' like copper and pewter develop a natural patina over time, which works beautifully for cabinet doors or island exteriors. However, high-use areas, such as around hobs and sinks, require sealed finishes to prevent discolouration and ensure durability. To enhance longevity, we apply specially formulated coatings to metals like copper, preserving their beauty while protecting them from everyday kitchen conditions. This lets homeowners enjoy the aesthetic of metal without sacrificing practicality.'

What Are Some of the Biggest Challenges You Face When Designing Kitchens in Historic or Heritage Spaces?

'Heritage properties come with a unique set of challenges, particularly if they’re listed and you have to work around certain features or accommodate uneven walls or floors. This is where bespoke furniture comes into its own, as every piece can be made exactly to fit – and to be freestanding, if fixing to the walls is difficult or even forbidden.

One particular example was the Stroud kitchen, which we created in a 16th-century Cotswolds home. Fitting furniture against the wonky walls or around the original doorways would have been too difficult. So, we avoided this issue by creating not only an island, but also two other large pieces of freestanding furniture to contain the ovens and the fridge, and the freezer.'

What Does the Future Hold for Ledbury Studio?

'We are exploring innovative techniques to craft curved designs in marble and stone, creating striking and dramatic kitchen islands. Additionally, I am passionate about incorporating English hardwoods, particularly English walnut – an under-appreciated yet exceptional resource – into my designs. To fully harness its beauty and potential, we are developing advanced technology to enhance its stability in kitchen environments.'

'Ever versatile and timeless, beige brings warmth and depth to any space. These neutral shades pair effortlessly with wood tones, enhancing the sense of comfort and tranquility, while also offering a soft contrast and balancing the cooler hues, such as blues and greens,' says Hannah Yeo, senior manager of color marketing at Benjamin Moore.

'Earthy and grounded, these hues add texture and visual interest without overwhelming the space, making them an ideal choice for kitchens. Their understated elegance allows other design elements to shine, while still contributing to a cohesive and welcoming environment,' she adds.

What's the Difference Between White and Beige Kitchens?

White and beige are both beautiful neutral tones, but they bring very different looks and feels to a kitchen. But the undertones and temperatures of these tones differ to create a different aesthetic.

'White offers a bright, clean atmosphere that feels open and modern. Crisp shades, like White Heron OC-57, can make a kitchen feel more spacious and airier, while providing a fresh backdrop that pairs effortlessly with a wide range of materials, including countertops and hardware. This versatility makes white an easy and timeless choice for cabinetry,' says Hannah.

'Consider the long-term relationship between your cabinetry color and the surrounding materials, for example, floors, countertops, and walls, which should feel harmonious,' Lauren adds, emphasizing the importance of understanding how a color pairs with other materials and finishes in your kitchen.

An open-plan kitchen, living, and dining space might all be in one room, but dedicated areas are usually created quite naturally. As such, you can lean into this and enhance the idea of zones.

'In open-plan homes, balance is key. Clear zoning allows a space to feel both connected and contained, offering the sociability of open living while maintaining a sense of intimacy,' says interior designer Lauren Gilberthorpe.

'It helps the room feel calmer and more purposeful, with each area supporting how people actually live day to day. When zones are well defined, the space feels harmonious rather than overwhelming.'

So, whether you're planning to totally separate the rooms with dividers or prefer to use decor to create a distinction between areas, here's how designers recommend making open-concept rooms feel more defined.

1. Introduce Dividers and Architectural Features

For some people, creating complete separation is key, so in an open-plan kitchen, looking to architectural changes is a great option. In an existing space, glass dividers can create zones without blocking natural light. The spaces still have a sense of connection without being totally open.

'Interior glazing is a joy. It opens up spaces, it closes up spaces, it creates nooks and corners, and it gives you opportunities to bring in glorious newfound light,' says Helen Parker, creative director of deVOL Kitchens.

If you're doing some larger changes to your space, you may wish to consider changes in room heights or flooring materials to create distinct zones without completely closing each room off.

'I love to introduce subtle architectural gestures that provide structure without closing the space entirely. A change in ceiling height, a timber beam, or a shift in floor material can all help create definition while retaining openness,' says Lauren.

2. Play With Furniture Orientation

There are smaller, simpler ways to create zones in an open plan kitchen and living area than installing glazing. Sometimes simply shifting your furniture can make all the difference to the feel of your scheme, creating a cozier area for relaxing.

It's not just about assigning a specific type of lighting to each area. Instead, layer lighting throughout the open plan space to create different moods, and add the right lighting, whether it's task or ambient, to different zones.

'I love layering lighting. Using a combination of pendant lights, sconces, and floor lamps allows each area to have its own mood. A statement chandelier above the dining table, paired with softer ambient lighting in the living area, creates natural separation and makes the space feel thoughtfully curated,' explains Cathleen Gruver of Gruver Cooley.

4. Place Rugs To Define Each Area

Not all layouts can accommodate large furniture pieces to create defined zones. In these cases, consider using rugs to create those defined zones without filling much-needed floor space.

'Rugs are a great way to create zones within an open plan kitchen or living space, as they are a visual indicator that the room is broken into distinct areas. We suggest placing rugs under the sofa or chairs and a coffee table to indicate a more defined living room section; make the rug as large as you can, as it will act as a border to the space and also bring a sense of luxury,' suggests Cath.

It works just the same in your dining space, too. 'A large woven rug beneath a dining table or soft underfoot texture in a seating area immediately signals a change in function without interrupting flow,' adds Lauren.

For this approach to be successful, you need to be really intentional about the style and size of rug you introduce. A rug that's too small will make your space feel awkward, but if it's too big, you will lose that sense of zoning.

'Scale is important to consider when selecting a rug. Rugs should be large enough to extend beyond the furniture but not so large that they overwhelm the space,' explains Lauren. 'Incorporating a carefully curated vintage rug is one of our favorite ways to add texture and warmth to a home while defining its zone.'

'Spaces don’t have to be symmetrical either. In a recent project, we introduced a curved banquette that softened the geometry of the room and created a cosy nook that feels relaxed yet refined,' says Tom Wicksteed, co-owner and director at 202 Design.

'We use color throughout our work to help create zones and atmospheres. 'An island acts as both a functional workspace and a visual boundary. We love pairing this with large, statement lights above the island to clearly define the kitchen zone, drawing the eye and anchoring that part of the space without needing partitions,' explains Cath.

'A freestanding island can also act as a natural border between cooking and living areas. It helps to ground the kitchen while keeping sightlines open, and if it’s movable, it offers flexibility to adapt the space for entertaining or family life,' adds Tom.

Even the most spacious open-plan rooms can feel cozy and defined with the right designs and decor choices. 'We always focus on using vintage kitchenalia to style our showrooms. It seems natural for us to use these traditional items rather than new accessories because they are in keeping with the look of the rooms, and they have a much more inspirational and authentic feel,' says Helen Parker, creative director of deVOL.

And there is so much inspiration and joy to be found in pieces from and inspired by traditional kitchens of the past, which is why we are all embracing the vintage kitchenware trend. Here are the five vintage kitchen items designers say are making a comeback and how to style them in your space.

1. Wall-Mounted Pot Racks

You've probably noticed the most stylish kitchens around feature a pot rack, and it's a look that designers love for its vintage charm, which adds function in abundance.

'Pot racks provide a focal point in a kitchen as well as keep the pots and pans within reach. Mixed metals have been popular in kitchens for a while, and this provides another way to introduce a different metal, such as copper, to the space,' says Nadia Subaran, principal and senior designer at Aidan Design.

While they are a great way to store pots and pans you have no cabinet space for, there is an element of styling that makes pot hangers more appealing. After all, no one wants a battered, scratched pan as the centerpiece of their kitchen.

'You know I love a pot rack, and they are definitely having a resurgence. They seemed to have fallen out of favor because people try to avoid clutter, but the key to styling them is to only hang your prettiest pots,' adds Drew Michael Scott of Lone Fox.

2. Copper Molds

Perfect for displaying on open shelves or hanging on a pot rail, copper molds have been cropping up in kitchens of every size and style. These small, quirky items were once used to make jelly and cakes, but they now appear at vintage sales for reasonable prices.

'I love copper accents and have recently fallen in love with copper Jello or pâté molds. The shapes are amazing. I am sure you can still use them, but I think they are perfect for display. I’ve seen them hung on walls in a gallery-style arrangement, which can look amazing,' says Drew.

And while they are totally charming as display pieces, he notes that there are some fun DIY projects you can create with them, too. 'I recently saw someone drill a small hole in the top of one to use as a lampshade, and I will definitely be stealing that idea.'

'Shaped butter is definitely having a revival right now, and there are so many cute molds you can use to shape your butter. The wooden ones are especially charming and can be displayed when you are not using them,' says Drew.

'Green glass that was thrifted or passed down from a family member is another vintage kitchen item we have seen making a return. For instance, one of our clients displays her heirloom green glass on open shelves in her kitchen. It accents the light wood cabinetry we designed for the space,' says Nadia.

'Green glass or vintage glass pieces look beautiful on open shelves or in glass display cabinets, where you can enjoy the color and shape of the pieces. In the kitchen shown, we paired the open shelves with vintage glass, an antique-style pendant over the sink, and white dinnerware and green dishes.'

Design & first impressions

For a compact system, the Nutribullet Ultra Plus has a lot of moving parts. In addition to the motor base, I unboxed three different-sized cups, a food processing bowl, and multiple tops and blades. All of which I spread out on my counter to take stock while I read the set-up instructions.

The base is small enough to leave out full-time and light enough to move around, and instead of typical non-slip pads, it comes with small suction cups on its underside to keep it in place during use. After finding a home for the base and plugging it in, I also clocked the two glowing touch controls: one to start a 30-second automated cycle and one to freestyle or use to pulse.

My very next thought was, 'Where am I going to store all this?' You may want to clear out a shelf in your pantry or kitchen cabinets before you make the purchase.

Blending Performance

Our team has already reviewed the original Nutribullet Ultra and awarded it five stars for its powerful blending and ice-crushing performance. I tested the same ingredients in the new Nutribullet Ultra Plus to see if anything had changed.

Test 1: Berry smoothie

My first blending attempt consisted of strawberries, blueberries, some fat free Greek yogurt and about half a cup of water. And now I know why they call it a smoothie. Just one, 30-second, low-volume cycle and I was rewarded with a tasty, creamy shake with an easy-to-drink consistency.

Test 2: Frozen protein shake

Next, I tried a trickier protein and frozen fruit smoothie, with a scoop of protein powder, a banana and a large handful of ice. I used the double-walled blending cup to help control the temperature and hit the solid circle for the preset cycle. The first time I tried this recipe, I learned my lesson about throwing the ice in last. The blade tried its best to cram through with a sonic screech and a smell that reminded me of burnt hair on a curling iron. 30 seconds was not going to do the trick here so I waited about 5 minutes and tried again.

This time it plowed through the semi-crushed ice and went to work nicely on the fruit and powder to push out a well-blended, chilled protein shake. The second time I used this same recipe, I put the ice in first and shook everything up before I blended. This helped a ton, and though I still had to use two cycles, at least it didn’t smell, or sound like someone was throwing rocks at a tin roof. Oh, and those suction cups definitely came in handy here.

Food processing performance

The Nutribullet Ultra Plus goes beyond blending, promising to chop, slice, and even grind coffee beans and spices. I tested every attachment to see how well it delivers.

Test 1: Chopped onions

Anyone who cooks consistently has dealt with the existential chore of chopping onions. So why not get this little gadget to do the dirty work? The 2-cup food processor bowl is the perfect size to chop a full onion and I put it to work with glee.

Once the bowl was locked onto the base, I slid on the chopping blade, threw in my hastily cut up onion, and locked on the lid. I decided to hold the dashed circle to process manually and it took about 55 seconds to get my desired fine chop.

No, you’re not going to get perfectly consistent onions like you do when you chop by hand, but if you’re using them in sauces, soups or stews, this is a fabulous time saver. I kept a tablespoon for the pasta sauce I was working on and put the rest in Tupperware to store in the fridge.

Test 2: Sliced carrots

Next up, slicing carrots. Though I don’t do it nearly as often as my chopped onions, the idea of simply sliced root vegetables was certainly appealing. This function also requires the processor bowl, though instead of the chopping blade, I slid on the well-labeled slice/shred disc with the slice side facing up and twisted on the lid.

I used two different carrots, each sliced in half. The first I put into the feed tube vertically for perfectly round slices and the next I fed in on an angle for longer ovals, using the preset cycle for both. This, I readily admit, was fun. It also provides gorgeously cut slices you’d be proud to toss into a salad or to roast up for the holidays.

Test 3: Grated Parmesan

The temperature in New York is finally dropping, which means I can start whipping up creamy risottos and pots of minestrone soup. And nothing says comfort food like freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

For this, I chopped up a chunk, dropped the pieces into the cup, twisted the lid back on, and locked it onto the base. Again, I used the 30-second control to start, and the noise it made now sounded like boulders being tossed on a tin roof rather than rocks. Boy, this was loud. Unfortunately, one cycle was not nearly enough to grate the hard cheese so I started another one.

Once this was done I peeked inside and was surprised to find my cheese in an odd state. Not only were there still larger pebbles left inside, but it was hot to the touch. Not completely melted but definitely glopped together. I still used it for my risotto, and it did the trick, but it was not the fluffy Parmesan I was expecting.

Test 4: Ground Spices

The next, and final, test was grinding spices. I love making Indian food, but I hate using the pre-made spice mixes you find in supermarkets. I threw equal amounts of coriander seeds, cumin seeds, and cardamom pods with a pinch of salt into the metal container, and pressed go.

One 30-second round was enough to yield a mound of aromatic, beautifully ground spices. I used a few tablespoons to season some chicken breasts, then put the rest in a sealed container for next time.

What is it like to use?

I enjoyed using the Nutribullet Ultra Plus. As a whole, it’s an intuitive, simple-to-use system with a straightforward instruction manual. Everything clicks simply onto the base, and the preset and touch controls are easy to turn on and off.

As mentioned, I especially appreciated those suction cups on its feet because it kept it securely in place when it was churning through the ice and hard cheese. I think this was an especially clever design feature. Like most inexpensive blenders, it needs a little help with drier or thicker loads, and you will have to reposition your contents between blends so all the ingredients reach the blade – but it’s certainly not a deal breaker. Prep was simple enough, though you do have to pre-cut many of your ingredients to fit into the smaller cups and bowls.

My biggest problem was the sheer number of attachments, and that is two-fold. Firstly, finding somewhere to place it all, including extremely sharp pieces like the freestanding chopping blade, was not easy. The entire point is its compact size, yet it has 14 pieces in total. I asked the rep if the company offered any type of storage unit, but she said that at this time, nothing is available. My second issue was figuring out which attachment went with each cup or bowl. At one point, I was sure I had broken it because I could not thread a lid onto the cup for my smoothie. It turned out I was using the grinder blade instead of the rapid extractor blade.

All in all, none of this is a deal breaker. Once you get used to each component and you find a safe area to store it all, it’s a breeze to use. And it gets (most of) your jobs done with ease.

Cleaning & maintenance

Not much to see here when it comes to cleaning. Other than the base, all the attachments are dishwasher safe, and I took advantage of that most of the time. However, you can just as easily run the covers under hot water and add a little dish soap for good riddance. I never had to scrub to knock off food from the blades.

Who would it suit?

The Nutribullet Ultra Plus is perfect for my fellow apartment dwellers or those with smaller kitchens. The base sits nicely on any counter, and it’s light enough to move anywhere you want to do your blending or processing. And because it offers multiple functions, it allows you to combine a handful of appliances into one. For just over $200, I’d say it’s worth it.

With its compact attachments, I’d also suggest this for smaller households of one or two people. My smoothies were perfect for just me, but if I had to make them for my two teen sons, I’d be doing a lot more work. If you’re cooking for a larger family, you may want to go up to a full-sized food processor or blender.

For a long time, one-wall or I-shaped kitchens were one of the least considered layouts. More of a choice because of restrictions than an actual design decision. They were smaller, had reduced surface space, and usually considerably less storage than a huge kitchen filled with walls of cabinets.

'A kitchen that is all confined to one wall can be quite stunning, and give an industrial bar feel. Having space for a table in front of the kitchen cabinets adds to the feel and is a good use of space for a sociable room where chores and socializing can happen simultaneously,' says Helen Parker, creative director of deVOL.

'Alternatively, being quite ingenious and managing to source mini appliances and clever storage solutions means you can fit a mini kitchen onto a short wall in a space that has many uses, such as an office, small apartment, or studio living,' she adds, speaking of the layout's versatility.

This shift echoes the growing desire for kitchens that feel less overfilled and busy. Stripping back the design to something simple yet still functional allows the room to breathe and makes using it more enjoyable.

'In my own kitchen, I love how the one-wall layout creates a clean, open feel – everything is in one place, which makes it easy to cook without constantly moving around,' says Jodie Hazlewood, founder of The House Upstairs.

This softer, more cohesive aesthetic appeals to those who want their kitchen to feel warm and inviting, yet effortlessly integrated into the rest of their interior.'

There's a misconception that choosing a one-wall kitchen means compromising on functionality, but in the right space with the right design, it can be incredibly functional.

'A one-wall kitchen offers a minimalistic design that may suit individuals or young professionals where space is limited for open-plan living. It allows the design to work within open-plan spaces, creating a clean architectural line rather than a U-shape or L-shape layout,' says Allison.

'By consolidating storage, appliances, and work surfaces into a single run, the rest of the room feels more spacious and adaptable – ideal for homes where the kitchen blends into the living environment. It’s a very considered way to design, where every element has to earn its place,' she adds.

Allison agrees, adding 'the key is balance. Every element should be thoughtfully planned to optimise flow and functionality. Think vertically – use full-height cabinetry for storage, integrate appliances seamlessly, and keep the worksurface as uninterrupted as possible.'

She continues: 'Materials also play a vital role: tactile finishes and natural tones help ground the space and make it feel warm and timeless. Finally, good lighting – both task and ambient – ensures the kitchen remains both practical for cooking and beautiful as part of a wider living space.'

Even though I research beautiful spaces and speak with designers on a daily basis, I am still left surprised by some of the new trends that come forward.

For 2026, all signs point to our cooking spaces continuing to become more livable rooms, with less focus on utility and more on designing the space you truly love, filled with unique, personality-focused features. And there are some curve balls in here, too, with unexpected shapes and materials coming to the forefront. Here's everything designers are anticipating for kitchen trends in the year ahead.

The most coveted kitchen trends for 2026

From colors and materials to new and emerging features, these are the kitchen trends designers say you will see everywhere in 2026, and they're perfect additions whether you are remodeling a kitchen or planning a few thoughtful refreshes.

1. Pass through windows

Kitchens are no longer rooms that are hidden behind closed doors. Instead, they are designed and decorated as livable rooms that connect to living and dining spaces. As such, pass-through windows between the kitchen and living room are set to be a big trend as an alternative to an open plan layout, as shown in this modern European home in Tennessee.

'It works almost like a framed view: it connects the kitchen to the adjoining spaces without fully going open plan, allowing light, sightlines, and conversation to flow freely while still giving each room a sense of definition,' says Lauren Sullivan, founder and curator of Well x Design.

'It’s practical, but it also creates an architectural moment that feels intentional rather than default. And from a functional standpoint, it’s incredibly helpful for entertaining – food and drinks can move seamlessly through the opening without breaking the flow of conversation.'

2. Curves, curves, and more curves

Softer, more organic designs are at the forefront of kitchen trends, so expect to see curves throughout spaces, both in classic and unexpected ways. This trend is about removing some of the hard edges typical of kitchens without compromising on function.

'Curved and flowing forms – from arches to curved or softly contoured islands – are softening rigid lines and creating a more inviting spatial rhythm,' says Lauren Tolles, founder of Maison Birmingham.

It's a trend that's already begun emerging, like in Shea McGee's recent project filled with curvaceous profiles. Think outside of the box by introducing a curved backsplash, rounded chairs, or even a circular window if you're undergoing a full remodel.

3. Glass-enclosed pantries

It's not unusual for pantries to be designed as rooms connected to the kitchen, yet hidden behind a door that can be shut away. But in 2026, the pantry is going to become a bigger part of the main kitchen.

'I believe one of the biggest kitchen trends we’ll see in 2026 is glass-enclosed pantries. They’ve been steadily gaining traction, and I anticipate them becoming a staple in new builds and remodels alike,' says Kailee Blalock, co-founder of House of Hive Design Co.

'The appeal of this trend is twofold. On a functional level, it creates a dedicated space to house all the practical, everyday necessities of a kitchen: food storage, small appliances, even prep counters, while keeping the main kitchen clean and uncluttered,' she explains.

She also notes that there are plenty of aesthetic benefits to this trend, too, elevating the look of something that is essentially a storage space. 'Instead of hiding everything behind a solid door, a glass-framed pantry turns storage into a design feature, showcasing thoughtful organization, beautiful shelving, and even styled elements like ceramics or glassware,' she continues.

'Ultimately, glass-enclosed pantries strike the perfect balance between practicality and presentation, making them a natural next step in the evolution of open-concept kitchen.'

A glass-enclosed pantry means your kitchen storage inside needs to be as pretty as it is practical. Joanna Gaines's Magnolia has a beautiful range of kitchen storage that can all be mixed and matched to your shelves work hard but look chic while doing so.

4. Embracing the countersplash

The kitchen backsplash is becoming a real area of interest when it comes to kitchen trends. It may be a functional element, but it opens up a lot of opportunities for a design moment. And 2026 is the year of the countersplash.

'Carrying the countertop material onto the backsplash creates a clean, continuous surface that feels calm and considered. It avoids unnecessary visual breaks, which helps the kitchen feel more refined and cohesive. The repetition of a single material also allows other design details, such as cabinetry or lighting, to stand out,' says interior designer Lauren Gilberthorpe.

The versatility is what makes this trend so appealing. A subtle stone in a minimalist kitchen feels calming and cohesive, but in a bolder kitchen, a heavily veined marble creates a focal point and a characterful detail.

'In terms of kitchen color trends, earthy neutrals, warm whites and beiges, soft greens, and grounding browns are replacing high-contrast blacks, grays, and cool whites, helping kitchens feel cozier and more connected to nature and the rest of the home,' says Lauren Tolles.

We continue to crave a connection to nature, and the kitchen, which usually leads out to the backyard, is the room where we seek that indoor/outdoor flow the most. 'Many are also reintroducing butler’s pantries, hidden sculleries, or prep kitchens, thus allowing the main kitchen to remain a more polished, social space while keeping mess in a more private area.'

8. Cozy eat-in areas in small kitchens

Kitchen island seating has reigned supreme for a while now, but in 2026, small kitchens will be embracing the return of eat-in areas – small but perfectly formed seating areas featuring bistro sets and space-saving banquettes.

'Having an eat-in area in a kitchen adds an opportunity for softness and personality in kitchen design, which can otherwise have a lot of hard surfaces. Whether it's adding a cushy banquette or a warm wood table surface, these areas can really cozy up the kitchen,' says interior designer Carrie Moore.

Susan Klimala of TKS Design Group agrees, adding that 'gathering around a table is one of the most meaningful rituals in a home. Even in smaller spaces, it’s important to have a designated spot to sit down, share a meal, or connect over coffee. It brings balance to a kitchen that otherwise might be purely task-driven.'

9. Rich shades of purple and red are making a return

It's been some time since shades like purple and red have been referred to as the colors of choice in interiors, but especially in kitchens. However, as colors continue to be inspired by nature, people are seeking more unique interpretations.

'Nature continues to be an inspiration in kitchen colors, as we see the use of greens, browns, and terra-cotta, now introducing deeper colors like deep burgundy or midnight purple, which are found in flowers and eggplants. These purple hues are making a comeback,' says Shae Wilder of BlueStar.

It's a tasteful, timeless take on this controversial hue – think less lilac-like purple and more rich burgundies, eggplant shades, and merlot kitchens. They feel chic, elevated, and a little bit less expected than the usual greens and browns.

'This look is simple and uncluttered, light stone flooring, or brick floors, handmade rugs, and a color palette that sticks to natural tones. No fancy lighting, something industrial or wispy and natural. Open shelves and beautifully crafted pottery and linens, this kitchen is like a summer vacation.'

11. Mirrored finishes

We use mirrors in almost every room of the home, not just for getting ready, but as a design feature that can brighten and elongate a room. And in 2026, expect to see plenty of mirrored finishes in kitchen schemes.

'Mirrored finishes are going to be huge in kitchens in the coming year. Besides being easy to clean and inexpensive to procure and install, mirrors have the added benefit of visually expanding a small space, or reflecting light in a dark one,' says interior designer Bethany Adams.

'We're utilizing mirrors in different materials and colors, such as a pink mirrored acrylic range hood, to bring unexpected sophistication and interest to kitchens,' she explains of the trend's versatility.

The vintage kitchen is coming into its own this year, with thrifted finds and kitchenware of the past making a comeback. From vintage lighting and artwork to rich, inviting colors and materials, mixing old and new has never looked so chic.

'I am seeing and loving kitchens that have a bit more personality, using old prep tables, dark wood, textiles, paint effects, and more muted colours. 'This space in our Countryside Tudor Remodel had such incredible natural light and original character, so I wanted a finish that would feel sophisticated yet soulful. The merlot tone added just the right balance of contrast against the creamy perimeter cabinetry and brass hardware,' says Ashley.

'It feels bold but timeless, and it grounds the space in a way that makes your morning coffee feel like a ritual. It also nods to the Tudor architecture without feeling traditional, which was important to me in this home,' she adds.

'Thanksgiving kitchens are all about creating a cozy atmosphere, so I love layering lighting,' says designer Michelle Murphy of DEMI RYAN. 'A combination of under-cabinet glow, pendants on dimmers, and even a candle or two instantly softens the space and makes it feel inviting.'

For Sherrell Neal, founder of Sherrell Design Studio, greenery is an essential part of creating that warm, lived-in feeling. 'Greenery always brings warmth to a kitchen, whether fresh or faux,' she says. 'Bundles of branches, garlands, or even a simple sprig of rosemary instantly invite the fall spirit indoors. A dough bowl on the island filled with fresh fruit or nostalgic treats, like saltwater taffy or tootsie rolls, adds personality,' she suggests.

Designer Christina Cruz recommends tying your kitchen styling to your overall Thanksgiving scheme. 'Create a centerpiece that ties in the hues of fall,' she advises. 'Layer in deep burgundy dahlias, burnt orange marigolds, golden mums, and sprigs of eucalyptus – then echo those tones in napkins and glassware to create a seamless flow from kitchen to table.'

And for a little extra charm, Kathy Kuo loves to bring in a few festive details. 'I set out mini pumpkins, gourds, and an oversized vase filled with seasonal leaf branches,' she says. 'It’s all about creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere.'

No matter how big or small your kitchen is, it’s always where people tend to gather – and thoughtful planning can make that feel intentional rather than chaotic. 'There’s nothing better than welcoming family into your home for Thanksgiving,' says Bethany Adams.

'To make the space that much more inviting, set out nibbles and bottles of wine and glassware on the island so guests can help themselves and stay out of your way while you cook,' she adds.

'Encourage gathering with thoughtful seating,' adds Michelle. 'If space allows, pull up a few extra counter stools or place a small chair in the corner. People naturally gather in the kitchen, and creating intentional spots to sit makes guests feel welcome instead of in the way.' 'It not only enhances the presentation with a touch of playfulness but also makes cleanup easy.'

'Keep counters functional but bring in touches of character: a wooden board with seasonal gourds, a bowl of fresh pears or pomegranates, or copper cookware displayed on open shelving,' adds Christina. 'These small vignettes instantly make the space feel styled but lived in.'

'Tie the kitchen design to the dining table decor. If your arrangement pulls in rust and gold tones, echo that in napkins & glassware. The continuity creates a seamless, thoughtful flow from kitchen to table.'

Creating a welcoming kitchen for Thanksgiving isn’t about grand gestures – it’s about intention. 'Before guests arrive, I always put on a playlist and light a candle or two to set the mood and add to the cozy, inviting atmosphere,' adds Kathy. 'I recommend setting out glassware and a few bottles of wine so guests can help themselves to a drink while they’re helping you prep or mingling over appetizers. You could even whip up a batch of spiked apple cider on the stovetop – it’s wonderfully warming, tastes amazing, and makes your kitchen smell incredible!'

And while we often look to future kitchen trends, we can actually learn a lot by looking at kitchens of the past, and how our approach to them has evolved. And 10 years ago, they looked a lot different.

To discover the features that have changed the most and those that have stood the test of time, we've turned to interior designers to discover the biggest trends a decade ago and the features they still love today.

What did the most on-trend kitchens look like 10 years ago?

While some things remain timeless in our kitchens, others are fleeting trends that we look back on with a few regrets. According to designers, these are the biggest trends of the 2010s and how they have evolved over the decade.

1. Cool-toned neutrals and farmhouse aesthetics

Cool-toned neutrals were the most coveted kitchen colors of the 2010s. People craved brighter, lighter homes, and the minimalist kitchen became the epitome of that look, with dark wood accents and farmhouse-inspired motifs.

'Ten years ago, kitchen palettes skewed neutral, with white or gray kitchens reigning supreme. Marble and quartz countertops, open shelves, two-tone cabinets, and rustic farmhouse accents were all popular at the time,' recalls interior designer Kathy Kuo.

Designer Kristina Khersonsky agrees, emphasising the trend for all things gray. 'Kitchens were leaning heavily into cool tones, especially gray. It was an attempt to move away from the all-white kitchen, but now we’re seeing a complete departure from gray tones altogether. Homeowners are craving even more character and a peek at personality.'

The color palettes are one of the most significant changes between kitchens today and those considered most stylish 10 years ago. Bolder colors are at the forefront, wood tones have become more considered, and even the way we decorate with neutrals has evolved tenfold.

'Now we’re finding balance. Medium and darker woods are returning in a refined way, adding depth and texture without the heaviness of a decade ago,' explains interior designer Ami McKay.

'The white-on-white kitchen that once dominated is being refreshed with paint, sage greens and navies, chalky flesh tones, and flashes of jewel color that add personality,' she adds.

2. Appliances everywhere

Perhaps one of the biggest changes in the kitchen (and one of the most welcomed) is the way we introduce appliances. And more to the point, being realistic about how many different appliances we really need compared to ten years ago

'You also saw many appliances in the kitchens – double ovens, commercial-grade fridges, and oversized ranges were popular. The kitchen was a place to showcase high-performance appliances, front and center,' says Kristina, explaining that today's approach is much more refined, with integrated appliances and a more lived-in aesthetic dominating trends.

'We’ve seen a shift from showcasing appliances to concealing them. Clients want kitchens that feel seamless and warm, so we’re using panel-ready fridges, appliance garages, and microwave drawers more and more to tuck functional appliances away. The goal is to maintain function without visual clutter.'

3. Warm metals

Not everything about kitchens from the 2010s has been left behind – between the cool-toned neutrals and minimalist schemes, timeless features were still prevalent, especially when it comes to kitchen hardware.

'When it came to finishes, we saw an embrace of warm metals in plumbing fixtures. There was a clear shift away from chrome and nickel, with golden brass and unlacquered brass becoming the standout finish of the time,' explains Kristina.

Brass is still one of the most beloved finishes for one very good reason – it's truly timeless. It blends seamlessly in traditional kitchens as well as more contemporary spaces, and it simply never dates. And it's something that designers still love today.

'I loved kitchens that incorporated antique brass details in light fixtures, hardware, and faucets. This gently weathered finish brought a welcome hint of nostalgia and character to the all-white kitchens of 2015,' adds Kathy.

4. Oversized islands

Kitchen islands have always been a real workhorse of the kitchen. But many designers recall that this must-have feature became a bit over-designed in the past, with layouts awkwardly working around a too-big island, or in some cases, multiple of them.

'In the mid-2010s, it was all about oversized islands, sometimes even double islands,' says Kristina. Kitchen islands became the focus of everyone's attentions, with everyone wanting this luxe feature to be the focal point of their designs.

And while islands are still present in kitchen layouts, there's a more considered approach to scale and design. 'Today, the island is still important, but its size is more intentional. People are prioritizing multi-functionality and flow, not just scale for the sake of visual drama,' Kristina notes.

5. Custom range hoods

It was also around that time that the custom range hood emerged, where designers and homeowners sought new ways to make something that can be a bit of an eyesore feel more aesthetic.

'The off-the-shelf hood was out; custom hood fan covers began to make their appearance, wrapped in metal, barnwood, or shiplap, turning the range wall into a feature of its own. Underfoot and on the walls, texture mattered,' explains Ami, who notes the custom range hood as one of her favorite trends of the time.

It's a trend that became especially favored in more traditional homes, where ultra-modern features felt misplaced and proportion was really important for an elevated and authentic design.

'Until then, ventilation had always been treated like a necessity you tried to hide. But in that moment, we saw oversized hoods take on a new role, grand, dramatic, often clad in metal, and unapologetically bold,' she adds.

The way we design kitchens has really changed over the last decade.

A room that was once filled with cool white and gray tones, warm wood, and oversized features is now warmer, richer, and more characterful. Bolder colors have come into their own, while neutrals are more layered for an inviting and timeless scheme.

But there are a few features that have stood the test of time, like brass hardware and custom range hoods – they've simply become more refined to reflect the changing needs of our cooking spaces.

We're not talking about huge open-plan spaces with a large table, but compact dining spaces that feel right at home even in small kitchens. Think charming bistro tables, cozy banquettes, or even a small breakfast bar.

It's about creating a comfortable, intimate spot to sit, eat, and spend quality time. Here's everything you need to know about eat-in areas and how to create one in your own kitchen.

In recent years, kitchen seating has revolved around the island. Bar seats to perch and socialize still have their place, but there's a very casual feel to them that feels like a quick stop, rather than somewhere to sit and relax.

'Islands are wonderful for entertaining and quick meals, but nothing replaces the conversation that family and friends have as they gather around a table, and can look at one another while they are enjoying conversation,' says interior designer Marika Meyer.

Eat-in areas are enjoying a revival for this very reason. And they are becoming particularly prevalent in smaller kitchens, where existing seating doesn't already exist, but designated dining nooks are being prioritised. And it coincides with the desire for more lived-in and loved kitchens.

'There’s a growing desire for homes to feel warm, lived-in, and versatile. Eat-in kitchens evoke a sense of nostalgia and togetherness, and for smaller homes, they eliminate the need for a separate dining room. It’s a blend of practicality and lifestyle,' says Susan Klimala of TKS Design Group.

'The kitchen is often the heart of the home. People love to hang out there, so utilizing the space to have an eat-in kitchen seconds as additional functionality for gathering,' adds Margaret Donaldson of MDI Luxury Design.

'Maybe this is where your morning coffee happens, or maybe this is where the grandchildren eat lunch mid-day while keeping your formal dining room a separate space for larger gatherings. The eat-in kitchens are a quiet luxury of everyday living.'

7 ways to create an eat-in area in your kitchen

Whether you're searching for a simple way to add an eat-in area to your existing kitchen or you're planning one into your remodel, here are a few designer-approved ways to introduce a small seating space to kitchens of every size and style.

1. Add Parisian style with a bistro set

Think of a French bistro, and a small round table with two chairs probably comes to mind. It's a simple approach, but one we associate with the chicest of cities. And it's a look that's easy to recreate in your small kitchen.

This deVOL Kitchen is a perfect example – a classic wooden bistro set has been placed in an unused corner with a pretty glass pendant light suspended above it. The effect? A cozy, intimate corner for dining, relaxing, and spending time with loved ones.

'We do a lot of eat-in kitchens where maximizing seating, space, and functionality are priorities. We always plan ahead with options of how we can make dining tables and chairs work due to limited space,' says Margaret.

'These spaces are really in the works from the inception of the process so that we can plan ahead with layouts and make adjustments as needed or make selections carefully when choosing furniture,' she adds.

A banquette is a great choice in a small kitchen, as it adds comfort and texture while only requiring a small area. It's why they are used so often in cafes and intimate restaurants – they require less square footage than a table and chairs.

'Make the most of limited space with banquette style seating, whether that be built-in or with freestanding benches, you can add storage underneath to really maximise space. A round table is perfect for small or awkward corners, creating flow and a cohesive look,' says Fred Horlock, design director at Neptune.

3. Use textiles to add color and coziness

Creating an eat-in area is as simple as adding a table and chairs, but introducing textiles and decor is a great way to add color and coziness. 'The kitchen in the cottage had such great innate charm, and I fell in love with the tiny nook that leads from the kitchen into the sitting room. It had a beautiful arched detail in the ceiling that was almost like a hug, saying Come here, sit with me,' says interior designer Georgia Zikas.

'I felt it would be a perfect spot for a petite table and pair of chairs. Morning coffee or afternoon snacks would agree! We added a fun rattan light pendant above the table to round out the warm welcome,' she adds.

Even though this charming cottage kitchen is a relatively small space, it was important to add an eat-in area to create a space to sit and relax, whatever the occasion. 'I always feel that having a landing spot in the kitchen, or at least nearby, is so beneficial to utility,' she continues.

'If you’re cooking or baking and something needs a few more minutes in the oven, it’s wonderful to have a seat nearby to perch on while watching the clock. Or if you have a guest over while cooking or baking, it is wonderful to have a spot for that guest to relax, sit, and chat. This smaller kitchen size didn’t allow for a full center island, so having the small table and chairs off to the side was simply perfect.'

4. Ditch a small island for a round table and chairs

It can be tempting to try to squeeze a small island into a compact kitchen, but more often than not, it ends up looking a little awkward and doesn't really provide a meaningful amount of storage or surface space.

But an eat-in area is a great alternative. A bit like a classic farmhouse kitchen, a small round table and chairs at the heart of your cooking space instantly feel lived-in and like a room to socialize in rather than just cook.

In this small cottage kitchen designed by Shannon Eddings Interiors, a simple wooden table set has been added to the center of the U-shaped layout. It makes the most of the space that isn't quite big enough for an island, and instantly indicates that this is the heart of the home.

5. Add a breakfast bar to a small galley kitchen

Some kitchen layouts just don't leave any room for seating, even a small bistro table. Instead, planning in a small breakfast bar at the end of a run of cabinetry is a great way to introduce an eat-in area without impeding on function.

'If your kitchen is long and thin, a staggered countertop is the perfect solution for a little breakfast bar, as galley kitchens rarely have enough width for a kitchen table,' says Helen Parker, creative director of deVOL Kitchens.

This kitchen proves just how simple it can be. This small section of staggered countertop offers enough space for two stools without taking up a large amount of space. Plus, the view out the window is a bonus!

6. Convert an unused closet into an eat-in area

Sometimes, a bit of DIY can create a space for an eat-in area that you never considered before. In this kitchen, what was once an underutilized closet has been transformed into a characterful, multipurpose eat-in area for every member of the family.

'This kitchen is in my own home. We converted a former interior closet, along with a small exterior storage space, to make room for the table. It was important to us to have two dedicated spaces for work/homework/eating in the kitchen,' says Marika.

'My youngest son still enjoys doing his homework in the kitchen, in the mix, and I like the idea that we can have a game on the table and eat at the island, or he can have school work laid out on the island, and we can use the table for dinner.'

7. Prioritize an eat-in area over excess cabinetry

If you're planning your eat-in area during a remodel or redesign, you can designate a small corner as a seating area, even if it's just a small two-seater like in this traditional kitchen.

'We actually intentionally eliminated some of the kitchen cabinetry to make room for a breakfast nook,' says Ania Agárdy of Luxury Living by Ania Agárdy. 'It transformed the kitchen from a strictly functional space into one that feels truly livable, just like any other room in the house.'

'An eat-in area within a kitchen can help the room feel warm and inviting. Whilst it may take up some cabinetry space, by incorporating cooking and dining within one room, it could negate the need for a further dining area – perfect for smaller homes,' adds Fred.

Storage is a really important part of your kitchen, but it can be tempting to fill every wall with cabinets, even if it's space we don't really need, or will encourage us to overbuy. Instead, a small seating area will maximize your kitchen in ways you'd never considered before.

Even in compact kitchens, having a small seating area where you can eat and socialize really transforms your space from one of utility to something more sociable. And that's something we are all craving in our kitchens right now.

'At the end of the day, the kitchen has been and remains the heart of the home. I don’t care how beautiful a house is - if there’s action happening in the kitchen, people want to be there. The kitchen has an innate trait of hospitality. It’s where we create the meals that feed the people we love,' says Ariane deBraux Triay of La French Goose Interiors.

Whether it's a small table and chairs, a charming banquette, or a space-saving breakfast bar, an eat-in area is the easiest way to add a table to a small kitchen without impeding function.

Choosing a kitchen backsplash requires a careful balance of style and functionality. And while various designs are on the table, few are as favored in a small kitchen as a backsplash in the same material as the countertops.

'For aesthetic reasons, people are loving a countersplash because it creates this seamless, super sleek look that feels intentional, simple, and high-end,' says Jennifer Verruto, founder of Blythe Interiors.

'There's also an added appeal of no grout lines to clean, which a lot of homeowners enjoy. Reducing visual clutter, like bold patterns and grout lines, is a powerful way to make a space feel bigger,' she adds.

It's also a chic approach to really showcase the beautiful stone you've chosen. 'It creates a seamless, cohesive look that feels elevated and intentional, and allows the cabinetry and architecture to take center stage. It also highlights the natural beauty of the material itself, whether it’s a richly veined marble, a warm quartzite, or a subtle quartz,' says Kailee Blalock and Taylor Troia, founders of House of Hive Design Co.

But it's not just the visual appeal that makes this backsplash approach so desirable. It also has a lot of practical benefits, including cleaning and maintenance, essentially making it a low-effort yet still utterly chic choice.

'A slab backsplash in the same material as your kitchen countertop creates a seamless, elegant flow with the added benefit of practicality. The continuous surface rises beautifully from countertop to wall, with no grout lines to disrupt the look – and it’s far easier to keep clean,' explains Jonathan Stanley of Caesarstone.

'Using the same material for both countertop and backsplash visually elongates the surfaces and creates the impression of more space. The consistency gives the eye fewer interruptions, which makes the kitchen feel larger and more open,' adds interior designer Lauren Gilberthorpe.

There's also a sustainability focus here. It's a method that can often reduce waste, which is not only good for the environment but your budget, too.

'Beyond aesthetics, matching the countertop and backsplash is also fiscally responsible on a project. This provides the most efficient use of a natural stone slab, especially in smaller kitchens that might not need the whole piece for just one surface,' says Magd Riad, president of Marmi.

What's the best material?

Choosing the right material will really take the look to the next level. For obvious reasons, stone is the best option for that seamless look, whether it's natural or engineered.

'Natural stone, such as marble or even lava stone, is a beautiful choice for this technique, as each slab has its own unique character and movement. For a more understated option, quartz can provide the same seamless look with a softer, pared-back finish,' says Lauren.

'From a design perspective, be mindful of how bold your slab is. If you’re already working with statement cabinetry or dramatic lighting, a quieter slab may let those details stand out. On the other hand, if the kitchen is minimal, a heavily veined or unique colored stone can become the art piece,' suggests Kailee and Taylor.

A beautifully veined stone is a look favored by Steven Cooper of Cooper Pacific, who adds, 'A richly veined slab running up part or all the way up the wall can become the room’s focal point. It becomes a piece of art you live with every day.'

'But be mindful that if you love decorative items, they can compete with the natural beauty of the surface and create visual clutter. Plan ahead by choosing accessories that either complement the stone’s undertones or provide a subtle contrast without overwhelming it,' he continues.

The type of stone you choose will depend entirely on style and budget. If you're designing your forever home and love the look of marble, it will always be a timeless choice. But on a tighter budget or in a less permanent residence, engineered options are a great choice.

'We’re usually strong advocates for natural stone, such as marble, quartzite, and soapstone, because each slab is unique, and these materials tend to add long-term value to a home. For our Vista Edge project, this wasn’t our client’s forever home, so we selected a cost-effective quartz instead,' says Kailee and Taylor.

'Our advice with quartz is to choose slabs with very minimal veining. Since quartz is man-made and patterns are essentially screen printed, slabs with dramatic veining often look inauthentic. Sometimes you can literally see the pixels. A subtle, uniform quartz keeps the design timeless and avoids drawing attention for the wrong reasons.'

A high-quality man-made stone can look just as chic as a natural one, while offering the added benefits of durability. 'Engineered stone and porcelain options are heat and stain-resistant, making them ideal for busy kitchens where cooking splashes are part of family life,' says Jonathan.

'Unlike natural marble, where veining can be tricky to align, quartz and other engineered stones deliver a flawless, cohesive finish with exceptional durability and longevity,' he adds.

How to ensure your kitchen countersplash looks elevated

As with any backsplash design, there are a few things you need to consider to ensure it looks elevated and well-executed, both practically and aesthetically.

'Some natural stones are more porous than others, so sealing and maintenance should always be discussed with your fabricator. Careful templating is also essential, particularly if the stone has strong veining, so that the flow continues naturally from countertop to wall,' says Lauren.

'If you have to use more than one slab, try to bookmatch the ends. This means you align the two slabs so that their veining mirrors each other. This creates a custom look and allows you to show off the stone's natural beauty,' adds Jennifer.

Beyond the exciting step of selecting your stone for your countersplash, the installation and maintenance are things you really need to think about.

'Slab backsplashes require precision cutting, especially around outlets and corners. They’re also heavier than tile, so installation must be done carefully by experienced fabricators,' explains Kailee and Taylor.

And, finally, remember that your backsplash is an investment, so choosing a material that not only stands the test of time, but is also something you will still love for years to come is really important.

'The key consideration is commitment. The material is continuous, so you want to choose something timeless, not just a trend. Make sure you love the color, the veining, and the finish, because it will define the space,' says Steven.

'And plan the slab layout thoughtfully. How the veining lines up from the counter to the wall makes all the difference between something that feels ordinary and something that feels exquisitely custom.'

Not every trend can be a winner, especially with the experts who have seen and tried them all. As we start to look toward the biggest kitchen trends for 2026 and beyond, designers say these are the ones that just don't make the cut.

1. Oversized pendant lights

Kitchen lighting over the last few years has favored one particular style: pendants. Over your island or suspended above a sink, they offered a new way to make something functional more aesthetic. But the oversized approach has started to feel overdone and outdated for some designers.

When I asked Corinne Ekle, founder and principal designer at C2 Design, which kitchen trend she wants left in 2025, she said, 'Oversized, statement pendants that dominate the room. The focus is shifting to smaller, more intentional fixtures that highlight the architecture and craftsmanship instead of stealing the show.'

Layered lighting is a much better way to create an inviting, characterful kitchen that still provides plenty of task lighting. Smaller, more considered pendant lights feel more timeless, and they pair beautifully with wall lights and even a couple of counter lamps.

2. Removing all the upper cabinets

The desire for a less utilitarian kitchen has hit us all. People want it to feel lived-in, cozy, and almost as if it's not a kitchen at all. But for some designers, it's perhaps gone a step too far, and we're beginning to lose some truly functional elements.

'The trend of eliminating upper cabinets is beginning to feel outdated. While minimalist kitchens can look airy in photos, they are impractical. Losing vertical storage often leads to cluttered counters or overstuffed pantries,' says Kelsey Matyas of Kelsey Deirdre Designs.

'Consider a balanced approach: reintroduce upper cabinets where needed, or choose glass-front or shallower cabinets that maintain openness while adding function. I hope to see kitchens that combine beauty and practicality, with thoughtful storage, hidden appliance garages, and details like plaster hoods, stone backsplashes, and pot fillers that add character without sacrificing function,' she adds.

3. All-white kitchens

Kitchen color trends are shifting towards warmer hues, whether it's a soft, inviting neutral or a rich, moody hue. So it probably comes as no surprise that many designers say the all-white kitchen feels left in the past.

'One minimalist staple I’m ready to leave behind in 2025 is the all-white kitchen. Don't get me wrong, I still love white cabinetry, but I'm ready to see more layered texture and contrast enter the picture,' says Sarah Brady, founder and creative director of Salt Design Company.

'While timeless in its own way, we prefer kitchens that layer in contrast, warmth, and texture, bringing more personality and depth to such a well-loved, high-traffic room. Give the island or lower cabinets contrast with a deeper hue. Think navy, olive, or taupe. Then, soften the look by layering in texture: swap in rattan pendants and style a few cutting boards or wood accents as intentional displays.'

Now, no one is saying that having a white kitchen is outdated – it's a classic neutral that will always have its place. But if your kitchen features nothing but white, it's going to feel flat and sterile. There are plenty of smaller ways to bring your space into 2026 without repainting or ripping it all out.

'A complete remodel isn’t necessary to bring your kitchen into 2026. Start by layering in warmth: introduce wood accents through cutting boards or open shelving, or add mixed-metal hardware for subtle contrast,' suggests Corinne.

'Even small upgrades like new barstools, pendant shades, or cozy textiles can dramatically shift the mood. Use your kitchen as a gallery for your personality by styling open shelving with vibrant ceramics, vintage glassware, or cookbooks you love – these little moments make a space feel alive.'

4. The rustic farmhouse aesthetic

If you think back to 2024, every aesthetic that encompassed farmhouse style topped the trends. It was rustic and characterful, something everyone craved as the kitchen transitioned to become more lived-in rooms. However, it's a look that, in some cases, has gone a bit too far and has started to feel less timeless.

'Rustic and farmhouse kitchens, long oversaturated in the market, are falling out of favor,' says Hillary Cohen of HCO Interiors, who notes that people are now looking for less obvious approaches to add texture and interest to their kitchens.

'Instead of overtly distressed woods and shiplap, we’re seeing this aesthetic reinterpreted through subtler, textural approaches – plaster walls, limewash finishes, and artisan-crafted details that bring depth and character without leaning too heavily into nostalgia,'

5. High-contrast black and white spaces

One thing we can say for sure is that stark kitchen color palettes are very much out of style, and are a fast track way to make your kitchen feel stuck in the 2010s. But there's one color pairing in particular that designers want to leave behind.

'High-contrast black-and-white interiors and overly stark minimalism are on their way out. The pendulum is swinging back toward spaces that feel softer, more layered, and grounded in comfort,' says Diana Wagenbach of Studio W Interiors.

Similarly to the way we are approaching white kitchens, layering, texture, and softer contrast are much more timeless and tasteful. And for Diana, bringing in organic forms and natural materials is key.

'Think layered neutrals, rich wood tones, and natural stone with organic movement. Furniture and case goods are leaning sculptural and tactile, with curves, soft edges, and artisanal detailing,' she adds.

6. Fluted cabinetry

It's been an adventurous year in terms of searching for new and exciting ways to add texture to kitchens. We've seen metallic coverings, zellige tiles, and even fluted kitchen cabinets take center stage, but the latter is one that designers aren't totally taken by.

'I love fluted details, but not in kitchens. It’s nearly impossible to keep clean. Fluted cabinetry is trendy now, but soon it will date any kitchen to the 2020s,' says Jennifer Press of Press Interiors.

Instead, you could bring in fluted details through lighting, furniture, a kitchen sink, or even your kitchenware, such as a fruit bowl or marble tray. They are smaller ticket items that are much easier to clean, but they still elevate your space with texture and interest.

7. Uniform finishes

Cohesion is really important in your kitchen design, but that doesn't mean everything has to match. From mixing metals and finishes to playing with scale, uniformity is out as we head into 2026.

'Uniform finishes in the kitchen feel predictable. Embracing contrast and allowing cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures to differ creates depth. Mixing metals brings richness and sophistication to the overall design,' says Coco Greenblum of Studio Coco Greenblum.

'If your kitchen has matching finishes, a full renovation isn’t necessary. Small swaps, like changing cabinet hardware or light fixtures to a contrasting metal, can make a big impact. Layering variation gradually adds character without overwhelming the space.

While most recent kitchen trends have an air of timeless appeal to them, there are always a few that are fleeting. And if you're designing with longevity in mind, consider introducing elements that designers think will be big in kitchen design in the next 10 years, and stay away from any trends that prioritize aesthetics over function.

Your kitchen backsplash plays a key role functionally and aesthetically, especially behind a cooktop where food splatters, condensation, and everyday wear and tear are commonplace. But at the same time, you can understand why the sleek, minimal look of no backsplash appeals.

It's an unexpected kitchen trend that seems to be making waves, but is it really a good idea? I've turned to interior designers to discover the appeal of backsplash-free designs, and whether it's a choice they would actually recommend.

It's been a year of interesting kitchen backsplash trends, with this functional feature becoming the focus of our attention to bring style, timeless appeal, and a unique feature to our spaces.

We've seen the rise of striking tile mural backsplashes and even paneled kitchen backsplashes, another trend that divided opinions. But after so many that embrace various materials and striking designs, we're now seeing a shift towards something more minimalist.

'We’re seeing some clients lean toward minimalism in their kitchens - whether that’s expressed through fewer visual details or a more restrained material palette. A traditional tiled backsplash can sometimes feel too busy, especially when paired with heavily veined countertops or open shelving,' says Kristina Khersonsky of Studio Keeta.

'Ditching it, or opting for a more seamless option, helps create a clean, calm space, both visually and practically. Fewer grout lines means less upkeep, and that simplicity is really appealing to homeowners right now,' she explains.

However, it's not just about creating a space that feels a bit calmer or less busy – many designers and homeowners alike are continuing to seek ways to create a kitchen that feels unique while still maintaining a sense of design longevity.

'I think people are craving moments of surprise in their homes, and the backsplash has become a place to reimagine what’s possible,' says interior designer Marie Flanigan, who has experimented with backsplash designs in many of her projects, including her own home.

'In my own kitchen, I placed the range against a bank of windows instead of tile, which allows natural light to pour in and keeps the design feeling fresh and architectural. Without the visual weight of a traditional backsplash, the room feels lighter, calmer, and more connected to the outdoors.'

But while a backsplash-free design can feel sleek and seamless, the question on everybody's minds is whether this trend is actually a good idea or an approach that is totally impractical.

'The answer is both – it really depends on execution. A window or plaster wall behind a range can be stunning, but it also introduces challenges with heat, moisture, and cleaning. When supported by proper ventilation, durable finishes, and careful detailing, it’s not only achievable but can also perform beautifully over time,' says Marie.

'The key is material and mechanical performance. Choose surfaces like sealed plaster or stone that can handle high heat and are easy to maintain. Equally important is integrating a strong yet discreet ventilation system so the design feels seamless while still meeting the functional needs of a working kitchen,' she advises.

Materiality is key here, so if you want to embrace the minimalist look of a kitchen without a backsplash, you need to be willing to invest in the right materials to make it work.

'Where we see issues arise is when people skip the backsplash altogether and just leave painted drywall behind the counter. Unless it’s finished with a heavy-duty sealer, that surface is susceptible to splatters and stains,' says Kristina.

'In areas with a lot of water or cooking splatter, I think the maintenance of a painted or stained wood backsplash is just not worth it. Tile and/or a stone surface is just much easier to maintain in the long run, making it more cost-effective,' adds interior designer Nureed Saeed.

If you want to create that seamless, minimalist kitchen look without the functional concerns of a backsplash-free space that hasn't been prepared properly, there are some other approaches that give the same feel.

'Most of my clients prefer function and long-term investment over trends, so I have not had to work too hard to convince them to choose a more practical choice in the most used areas of the kitchen. Carrying the same counter material to the backsplash is an easy way to give the look of no backsplash without losing the practical use,' says Nureed.

'One of my favorite compromises is running a slab of stone just behind the range, while leaving the adjacent walls clean and minimal. This approach preserves the streamlined, architectural feel but adds an extra layer of protection where you need it most – a thoughtful balance of beauty and practicality,' adds Marie, which allows you to embrace the trend while adding extra durability to the most functional areas.

As with any trend, there are pros and cons to ditching your kitchen backsplash for a pared-back look. If you're embracing the trend, make sure you prepare your kitchen walls properly and are willing to commit to the upkeep; otherwise, it's going to become a kitchen feature you'll live to regret.

'Ultimately, it’s about tailoring the material and layout to the design of the kitchen and how the homeowner actually lives in the space,' says Kristina.

So, will you be ditching your backsplash or opting for something more hardworking? If you're worried about the wall behind your cooker, introducing your cooktop to your kitchen island is a potential solution.

But the key takeaway from designers here is that you really need to weigh up function versus aesthetics. In a busy family kitchen or a space where the regular maintenance to keep your walls clean isn't an option, it's probably not the trend for you.

However, as Kristina notes, the trend can work 'if the kitchen is more of a showpiece than a daily workspace or if the client is exceptionally tidy and willing to maintain it. In those cases, we’ll sometimes spec a higher-performance paint or even just add a minimal trim or lip to protect the edge.'

And Marie has demonstrated that it can look utterly stylish in the right space, especially where architectural features like windows or exposed stone walls are the real focal point of the room.

So, it probably comes as no surprise that the latest kitchen countertop trend spotlighting Rosso Levanto, a rich burgundy marble with dominant white veining, is proving one of the most popular I've seen in a long time.

A far cry from the white and gray marble countertops that have become the go-to, this richer alternative adds the same luxurious appeal, but with a bolder, more unique look. And designers absolutely love it.

'We love using deeper burgundy-toned marble because it allows for a playful color in a completely timeless material – and what’s more timeless than stone?' says interior designer Susannah Holmberg.

'We love to incorporate the muted reds, burgundy, and browns for a lot of our color palettes, and this is such a distinct way to bring them in. We don’t worry a ton about trends, but I would imagine that people are looking for a bit of levity these days,' she adds.

The reason this countertop material has been received so well is for its versatility. Unlike the green countertops that have trended but dropped off relatively quickly in the past, these rich burgundy tones almost act as a neutral. And it seems they are far from a fleeting trend.

'Because these are still colors from the earth, they can be thought of as another neutral really, akin to a deep or chocolate brown, and can be integrated much the same way,' says Susannah.

You can add them to a neutral kitchen or a colorful kitchen, and it will integrate beautifully without overwhelming the senses. It's bold but not garish – it enhances your kitchen without completely taking over.

'Burgundy marble is a great contrast to lighter kitchen cabinet colors – I'm always about a good contrast! It's a strong look but in a subtle way, meaning it adds a lot to a room without stealing the show,' adds interior designer Crystal Sinclair.

'I think everyone is looking for something different. I mean, we've seen white marble over and over for the past two decades. Burgundy is a lovely marble that adds color to a space,' she explains of its appeal.

As well as being visually stunning, this striking material has a few practical benefits that may appeal too. While it has the same pros and cons as other marble variations, it does have one benefit that lighter tones don't: it is more resistant to staining. 'The colors are so deep and rich, and they hide dirt – particularly red wine rings – very well,' says Susannah.

The success of burgundy marble countertops lies in how you style them. 'I love starting with one material, whether that be a stainless steel, a paint color, or a marble, and then exploring different options that work with it or contrast with it (in a good way). I try to pair things that I haven't seen paired before,' says Crystal.

Unless you are in the midst of a kitchen remodel, replacing your kitchen countertops with Rosso Levanto marble might be a bit unrealistic. However, you can bring in the essence of this beloved material through kitchenware and decor. This is how I am bringing this covetable, on-trend material into my kitchen this fall.

It may be referred to as a kitchen trend for now, but the enduring appeal of burgundy marble countertops cannot be ignored. It's bold and characterful, yet totally timeless. It's a great way to bring in a new kitchen color without taking away from your neutral style. It's definitely just shot to the top of my kitchen wish list. And it's ideal that there's so much of it featured in the fall collections of 2025, too, so it's really easy to bring into a kitchen in smaller accents, too.

As someone who lived through the seemingly endless love of gray kitchens, I've become a bit numb to them. I don't hate them per se, just a bit tired of them, and it takes a lot for one to catch my eye. That was, until I saw this textural design that contradicts everything I thought about this controversial color.

This kitchen is warm and textured, with the perfect amount of vintage style that it feels tasteful and timeless. And it's all thanks to an expertly chosen paint shade and a layered mix of materials.

Before

While the color is a real talking point of the newly remodeled kitchen, it was just one of many things that required a rethink in this space. And it was a project tasked to interior designer Olivia Botrie of Dart Studio, who explains that the kitchen before had a very different look and feel.

'The kitchen layout was very similar, but the finishes felt noticeably less elevated. The microwave was placed over the stove rather than integrated elsewhere, and the refrigerator wasn’t panel-ready, which gave the kitchen a more utilitarian feel,' she recalls.

'Overall, the detailing and level of refinement were minimal compared to what we typically aim for – the space lacked the layered finishes and thoughtful touches that create a polished, high-end look,' she adds.

The kitchen layout was one of only two things that the client wanted to retain, the second being the original character of the 130-year-old home through vintage-inspired details and thoughtful materials.

'Since our client has a background in interior design, she came to the project with a clear vision. She was after a vintage look with a quirky Victorian twist – layered, character-filled, and full of personality. Her home embraces a maximalist style with rich details, bold choices, and a sense of storytelling, and the kitchen was designed to blend seamlessly into that imaginative, curated aesthetic.'

After

Every small detail in this kitchen plays an important role in both the functionality and the authenticity of the design. 'The finished kitchen feels cohesive and intentional, combining vintage charm with everyday practicality – an upgrade that respects the home's history while making it more functional for modern living,' Olivia explains.

'We replaced all the millwork with custom cabinetry featuring classic profiles and a timeless, muted color palette. The new kitchen backsplash brings in texture and a subtle nod to the past with vintage-inspired tile,' she says, adding that new appliances, sink, and faucet were key to this.

But it's the choice to introduce gray on the cabinets that immediately caught my eye – and most importantly, how Olivia has taken a rather unloved hue and made it feel warm and full of character.

'The cabinets are finished in Farrow & Ball’s Drop Cloth, a soft, muddy neutral that creates a warm, timeless backdrop and complements the home’s vintage character. I’d describe it as a soft, putty-toned neutral – understated and versatile,' she describes.

'It’s not overtly warm, but it definitely leans more towards beige than gray, giving it a subtle warmth that keeps it from feeling too cool or stark. It works beautifully as a grounding tone and pairs well with both warm and cool palettes.'

As well as the shade of gray chosen, the materials Olivia has introduced aid its success in this space. 'To ensure the color felt warm and inviting, I paired it with rich walnut countertops, warm-toned wood flooring, and unlacquered brass accents,' she explains, noting that this natural warmth and texture bring a much-needed contrast and balance the various tones.

'This balance prevents the space from feeling overly cool or sterile, while still keeping it grounded and sophisticated. The interplay between the muted cabinetry and the warmth of the surrounding materials creates a layered, welcoming atmosphere.'

But beyond the color, there are plenty of standout features that really tie the whole space together. From the wood kitchen flooring to the custom cabinetry that runs all the way to the ceiling, it really is all in the details.

'I really love the stone detailing at the base of the faucet and around the bottom of the sink. It’s a subtle feature, but it adds a thoughtful, custom touch that elevates the whole space,' she says.

'These kinds of small design moments might be easy to overlook, but they contribute to that layered, well-considered feeling that makes the kitchen feel truly special and cohesive. It’s details like this that bring a sense of craftsmanship and intention to the overall design.'

The kitchen backsplash is another feature that adds warmth and vintage style to the room, but in a very practical way. 'The backsplash features handmade tile selected specifically for its aged appearance, adding texture and a sense of history. A classic farmhouse sink paired with a traditional bridge faucet reinforces the heritage feel, both aesthetically appropriate and deeply functional,' Olivia explains.

'Kitchen lighting was chosen with the same level of care: handmade sconces with pleated clay shades and walnut backplates offer a soft, ambient glow while echoing the natural warmth of the refinished walnut countertops, originally from the homeowner’s father’s workshop. Every element works together to create a space that feels both fresh and familiar – rooted in the past, but built for the present.'

The finishing touches really bring in a sense of tradition and personality. A brass pot hanger on the wall adds a nod to vintage kitchens while providing additional storage. On the countertops, pretty ceramics and elevated kitchenware create a lived-in, curated look that reinforces that unfussy feeling.

And finally, it's the small details that create a cozy, inviting atmosphere in the kitchen that encourages you to spend time here outside of cooking. A charming banquette in the corner filled with plush cushions creates a casual seating space, collected art on the walls adds personality, and the counter lamp creates a different layer of ambiance.

This galley kitchen is by no means a sprawling space, but it feels warm, cozy, and inviting. And while it's thanks to all of these various elements working together, the unexpected paint color really is the grounding force.

But when we talk about the materials you'll be seeing lots of in kitchens next year, it captures everything from small decor and hardware to larger installations. So, whether you are planning a remodel or a simple refresh, these are the materials to introduce.

1. Lava stone

One of the most obvious features of materiality is your kitchen countertops. It's one element where the material you choose is key to both style and function. And as we head into 2026, lava stone is expected to become one of the most desirable options – and it's a great black kitchen countertop alternative.

'Lava stone is a natural surface that is beautiful yet incredibly strong. It’s heat-resistant, highly durable, and made to last, which makes it perfectly suited to the demands of a kitchen,' explains interior designer Lauren Gilberthorpe.

'Beyond its practical qualities, it has a unique and striking appearance – the glazing process creates subtle variations in tone and texture, so no two pieces are ever the same. It offers a more expressive, statement look compared to traditional stone, yet still feels timeless, which is something our clients are increasingly drawn to.'

2. Iron and antique bronze

Finishes are always a big topic when it comes to kitchen trends. Brass is the ultimate classic that truly never dates, and over the past year, cooler-toned metals like chrome and nickel have been enjoying a revival.

But 2026 is taking inspiration from Spanish kitchens – iron and antique bronze are materials that you will be seeing a lot more of, and not just in Spanish revival homes. They're less polished, darker in tone, and a bit more dramatic than more traditional kitchen finishes, which is why they are so appealing.

Imagine a modern kitchen elevated with the contrast of deep bronze kitchen hardware, or a wooden kitchen with a statement iron pendant light. It's these small details that take a kitchen scheme from nice to layered and full of visual interest.

3. Terracotta

Terracotta is one of the traditional materials that has fallen out of the mainstream, more heavily associated with charming Italian and French homes. But over the last few months, we've seen terracotta tiles return to bathrooms and designers say they are an unexpected material to bring character into a kitchen too.

'The shift to incorporating natural materials in kitchens, like terracotta, has been gradually happening over the past few years and will be widely seen in 2026,' says Molly Torres Portnof, principal designer and founder of DATE Interiors.

And it seems 2026 is the year terracotta returns to kitchens of every style, whether it's a traditional, farmhouse design or a more transitional or modern scheme. And it's one that designers are particularly excited about.

'Terracotta is so versatile, and whether it's used as a tile backsplash, on the floor, painted, or natural, it creates a warm, comfortable feel in the kitchen,' Molly adds.

4. Metals

For a while, kitchen trends really embraced softer, cozier materials, but 2026 is set to mark the resurgence of metallic kitchen finishes. From cabinets to countertops, this more utilitarian material is making a strong comeback.

'We love the versatility of metal in the kitchen. Metal can be incorporated in any style, from a vintage pharmacy cabinet for dishware storage near a dining area to an entire kitchen clad in stainless steel or powder-coated metal,' says Christopher Sale of Gramercy Design.

'Utilitarian stainless steel countertops are also a great choice for prep islands or sculleries. For a more risk-averse metal moment, consider stainless steel shelving or pot racks to put your cookware on display.'

And it's not just stainless steel. 'I anticipate a comeback for zinc countertops. Zinc is a beautiful metal with a living finish that ages into a lovely blue-gray patina. It's also very easy to clean and naturally antimicrobial,' says Heather Kates, lead designer at MDI Luxury Design.

5. Glazed ceramics

When it comes to kitchen backsplash designs, a few different approaches have been favored over the past couple of years. Continuing your countertop material up the walls has proved popular for a minimal, seamless design, but in 2026, it's all about the return of glazed tiles.

'Glazed tile is having a quiet revolution, and honestly, it’s about time. We’re not just stopping at the backsplash anymore. We’re taking it floor to ceiling, letting it wrap the room the way paint or plaster used to,' says Jordan Ross, principal designer at PCD Studios.

'It’s beautiful, sure, but it’s also built to take a hit. It’s wipeable and forgiving, the perfect material that lives with you and not in spite of you. Real life happens in a kitchen, right? Mess, heat, noise, joy, splatters, and glazed tile make space for all of it.'

Not only is glazed tile an extremely durable kitchen material, but it pairs well with so many other colors, textures, and materials, making it a seriously versatile choice, whatever the style of your space, as Jordan explains.

'It plays well with everything: warm woods, honed stone, unlacquered brass, even stainless steel. You don’t need bold patterns or loudness to make it work; it just does. And let’s be real, there’s something deeply satisfying about wiping down a sauce-splattered wall after a Sunday dinner and not having to reach for the touch-up pen.'

6. Concrete

Concrete is a material that we associate more with our outdoor spaces. It's prevalent in outdoor kitchens more than indoor ones, but it's about to be a sought-after material in our indoor cooking spaces.

While there's a big trend for concrete kitchen countertops emerging, it's a fragile material for such a functional feature, so unless you like surfaces that age and mark, it's not the most practical option, even though it can look really elevated.

Instead, lighting and decor are key areas to introduce concrete accents. Textured pendant lights above your island, a statement counter lamp, or even a striking vase at the center of your kitchen table.

These subtle accents add depth and a contrast of materials to your space that feels truly curated.

Miami-based interior designer Ania Agárdy warns of the high cost of built-in models: ‘Another temptation difficult to resist is a built-in coffee maker that can set you back a couple of thousand dollars when a chic stand-alone one is just as useful. After all, it’s the quality of the coffee that really matters.’

Becky Shea highlights juicers as a common regret: ‘I totally get the appeal of a juicer – it looks sleek, and having one just feels like you’re making a healthy choice. But before you invest, consider whether you’ll truly commit to using it. They can be bulky, take up counter space, and cleaning them can be a chore. More often than not, they end up stored in a cabinet once the initial excitement fades.’

So when I started to see the emerging countertop trend for using concrete, I had to consult designers to dig a little deeper into whether this unexpected look is one worth investing in or ignoring.

They are striking, textured, and bring in an architectural detail that's hard to achieve with other options. But your kitchen countertops need to be equal parts aesthetic and durable, so does concrete hit the mark? Is it one of the best countertop materials or just a fleeting trend?

I've turned to designers to find out everything you need to know about concrete kitchen countertops – and it turns out, they might be a stylish choice, but they perhaps aren't the most practical. Here's what they had to say.

What's the appeal of concrete kitchen countertops?

Concrete is a far cry from the marbles and metallics that have proved popular in recent kitchen trends. Compared to these sleek, smooth surfaces, concrete countertops are quite the opposite, offering a rougher, more textured finish that adds a unique touch to kitchens.

However, it's exactly why they are proving popular. 'Concrete countertops appeal to many because they feel architectural. They bring a sculptural quality to the kitchen,' says Steven Cooper, principal designer at Cooper Pacific.

'They’re strong, weighty, and undeniably modern. There’s also a handmade element to them, and no two pours of concrete are ever quite the same, which gives the surface a bespoke, one-of-a-kind character.'

And they are also surprisingly versatile. While you might not see them in more traditional or cottage kitchens any time soon, they do work beautifully with a range of styles.

'Concrete surfaces are making a strong comeback, bringing a rugged, brutalist edge to modern kitchens. Surprisingly versatile, they complement industrial lofts, minimalist Scandinavian spaces, and even serve as a striking alternative to marble in classic farmhouse designs,' says Jonathan Stanley of Caesarstone.

'I think their popularity speaks to a larger movement in design; the desire for raw, authentic materials. In a world where so much is polished and perfected, concrete offers an edgier, unfinished chic,' adds Steven.

Are concrete kitchen countertops a practical choice?

There's no denying that concrete kitchen countertops are a striking choice, and a statement material to add tactility and unique appeal to kitchen schemes. But they do fall short when it comes to durability.

'While the look is timeless, poured concrete countertops come with practical drawbacks. Naturally porous, they can absorb everyday spills – encouraging bacteria growth and leaving behind stubborn stains from red wine, coffee, oils, and more. Even with sealing, they remain prone to scratches, require regular maintenance, and add to long-term costs,' explains Jonathan.

'I wouldn’t call concrete countertops practical. They demand sealing, they stain easily, and they can chip or crack; they aren’t forgiving in the way quartz or quartzite can be,' adds Steven, who explains that concrete countertops aren't the right choice for anyone who likes perfect countertops or for busy family kitchens.

'Concrete is more about atmosphere than utility, it’s about creating a mood, not about withstanding every spill or scratch. For those who want ease and low maintenance, it’s not the right choice. It’s for those who see beauty in imperfection,' adds Steven.

Whether or not concrete countertops are a good choice will depend entirely on your lifestyle and taste. If you like perfect, smooth countertops, they won't be the right choice. But, similarly to marble countertops, if you like that natural aging, marking, and overall just aren't too precious, they can be a characterful addition.

'Homeowners should be prepared for maintenance and understand that concrete will change. It may crack slightly, develop stains, or darken in places. That’s part of its nature. If you want something perfect and uniform, it might not be the right fit. But if you appreciate character and individuality, it could be exactly what you’re looking for,' adds Steven.

If, on the other hand, you don't like countertops that stain or mark easily, there are some alternative options. 'I recommend a concrete-inspired porcelain countertop or mineral countertop instead. With concrete-style engineered stone designs, you can achieve the raw, urban aesthetic you love while enjoying surfaces that are durable, low-maintenance, and future-proof,' says Jonathan.

If you do still love the appeal of concrete countertops and appreciate a material that ages over time, there are plenty of beautiful ways to design with and style them. A statement kitchen island is a popular choice, bringing an architectural feature at the heart of your space, and the rest of your countertops can then be made of a more durable material.

But it's also about the colors and materials you pair concrete with in a kitchen. 'Concrete on its own can feel stark, cool, even a bit severe, but the moment you introduce warm, organic wood, there’s a dialogue, one material grounds and the other softens,' says Steven.

'I especially love the way concrete interacts with lighter woods. Imagine dove-gray countertops against pale oak cabinets, but on the flip side, it can also be paired with the depth of walnut. Concrete gives the kitchen structure and presence, while wood brings the warmth that makes you want to stay.'

If concrete countertops aren't an option for your kitchen, there are still plenty of ways to bring this more industrial material into your space. From furniture to decor, these are a few pieces that allow you to get the look without a kitchen remodel.

I personally first saw the kitchen countertop idea in designer Marie Flanigan's most recent project, which she's only shared a glimpse of. I was immediately excited by the edge details and had to find out more about her choice and why she thinks paneled marble might be the new waterfall countertop.

'Paneled marble creates a sense of scale and sophistication that feels incredibly elevated and distinctly custom,' Marie first tells me.

'A waterfall edge is striking, but paneled slabs expand the drama, especially on kitchen island faces. This approach creates a cohesive, architectural statement that leans more traditional than a waterfall edge. It’s also a beautiful complement to the metal cabinetry integrated below this island,' she adds, referring to her new kitchen project.

'It reflects the care, thought, and detail poured into a space. The uninterrupted veining reads as architectural – almost sculptural – making the stone both backdrop and focal point.'

'We’re always fortunate to work with incredible artisans, and paneled marble requires that same level of expertise. I would always recommend you seek out seasoned fabricators who have executed this type of installation before. Aligning seams with cabinetry lines and ensuring consistent finishes and color-matched joints results in a polished, tailored effect,' she advises.

But what are they? I've asked the experts to share the kitchen countertop mistakes you need to avoid if you want a cooking space that is equal parts pretty and practical. And honestly? Their responses make a lot of sense.

5 kitchen countertop mistakes to avoid

Designing a kitchen is a long process, filled to the brim with important decision-making – choices no one wants to get wrong. To ease at least a bit of the pressure, interior designers have shared the kitchen countertop mistakes that you will live to regret, which in the long run, will help you to avoid a costly error.

1. Choosing a glossy finish

When it comes to choosing your kitchen countertops, it can be tempting to make choices based on tones and colors to match your scheme.

But a mistake many designers see all too often is all about the finish. A factor you probably thought was reserved for paint, but there are cases where people choose materials with a shiny finish that can really cheapen the look of your kitchen.

'Countertops can feel outdated when they lean into trends. We steer clear of polished or glossy materials, heavily speckled granite, and intensely veined quartz,' says Lauren Williams, of MV Architects.

'Instead, we encourage clients to choose natural stones like marble or soapstone with honed finishes that add texture and warmth. These options provide a classic, timeless appeal that's still fresh.'

Of course, this is a time and a place for a statement stone with bold veining and distinctive colors, but unless you have your heart set on a busy, bold kitchen, it's a look that you will probably tire of quite quickly.

After all, there is a beauty in subtlety that stands the test of time. Opting for a more matte finish with a pared-back look will not only age well as styles interchange, but it gives you a great base to go bold or neutral with the rest of your design, like paint colors and accessories.

2. Faux marble paint

We know you've seen the plethora of DIY home projects all over TikTok, and yes, some of them work. But when it comes to your countertops, those seemingly fun and affordable hacks will turn out to be your greatest kitchen renovation regrets.

And we get it, few countertop materials bring the same luxurious feel and visual delight that marble does, but for many people, it's a material that's just out of the budget. But trying to replicate the look cheaply is a countertop mistake you'll want to avoid.

'Some of the trending ideas with countertops are to do a faux marble paint over existing stone countertops. This is an absolute NO for us for many reasons. First, it never quite turns out like the TikTok videos show, and it wears very quickly,' says Josh Goldberry, of Third Street Architecture.

'Additionally, cleaning and maintaining a painted surface where you do most of your meal prepping and cooking is a nightmare. Instead, we prefer clients to explore natural stone countertops for both durability and some extra accent to a space. Natural stone provides a solid surface with low maintenance and even a bit of drama to the space.'

However, if natural stone is out of the budget, there are plenty of great marble countertop alternatives, such as porcelain, soapstone, and quartzite, just to name a few – all of which are much more sophisticated than a badly painted surface. And Josh has some more affordable suggestions that always prove stylish.

'If that is out of the budget, we often encourage clients to look at remnant pieces of natural stone, which can be a great solution at a lower cost. We tell clients to avoid the man-made stone countertops like Quartz, because the conditions under which they are made have a high negative impact on those cutting and fabricating due to the high levels of silica in the product,' he adds.

3. Choosing style over function

Your kitchen countertops need to work hard in many ways. Not only do they need to match the aesthetic of your space, but they also need to be durable and stand the test of time, especially if you're investing in a beautiful natural stone.

'Falling in love with a surface just for its beauty without thinking about how it will wear day-to-day is a huge mistake. Soapstone, for example, has a classic look, but it’s softer than other stones and can scratch or chip more easily,' says interior designer Hattie Sparks.

'If you really use your kitchen (cooking nightly, hosting friends, kids pulling up stools) it’s not the best choice. Countertops should make your life easier, not leave you stressed about every nick and spill,' she explains.

In some kitchens, these softer stones are great (especially if you don't commit to cooking big, complicated meals often), but in busier households and family kitchens, something a bit more durable is more appropriate.

'On a recent project, my private chef client initially wanted soapstone, but we chose a leathered granite instead. It gave her the same soft, understated look, but with far more durability. By selecting a slab with minimal veining, we achieved the feel she loved while making sure the space could handle real family life.'

4. Underestimating how much countertop space is needed

Kitchen countertop mistakes often revolve around the material itself, but others need to be considered earlier on in the planning stages. And this particular mistake is something that should be factored in when you're planning your kitchen layout.

'One of the most common mistakes is underestimating how much countertop space is needed. A countertop is rarely just for cooking – it also becomes the place for serving, family meals, homework, or working from home,' says interior designer Lauren Gilberthorpe.

It's an easy mistake to make, especially if you are remodelling before you move into your new home. You haven't had a chance to live in your space, so knowing how much countertop space feels right can be a tricky thing to guess. But Lauren has some useful tips that will help you make better decisions.

'Countertops are one of the hardest-working elements in a kitchen. If there is not enough space, the whole room can feel impractical, no matter how beautifully it is designed,' she explains.

'Always allow more countertop space than you think you will need – it is one of the simplest ways to make a kitchen genuinely functional.'

5. Cabinet and island countertops have to match

There are a lot of decorating techniques that are championed in kitchens, from two-tone kitchen cabinets to the trend for a statement island. But when it comes to your kitchen countertops, people often think they have to keep things uniform.

'While I adore a beautiful kitchen as much as the next person, kitchens are meant to be functional first and foremost. That’s why I love kitchen accents that pair style and function, and wooden cutting boards are a perfect example,' says interior designer Kathy Kuo.

'​For a bigger investment piece, lava stone is a studio favourite for its amazing crackle-like textures,' adds Franky Rousell, of Jolie Studios. 'We see this as a place you can be brave and inject personality. But blending a few different looks is the simplest way to add character and timeless appeal to your cooking space. An approach interior designer Eliza Alles chose when designing her own kitchen.

Blending coastal decor with the simplicity of Scandinavian kitchens, she has created a scheme that feels right at home in Nantucket, just a short distance from the coastline of Cape Cod. And her choice of colors, materials, and decor is key to the design's success.

Located in Nantucket, this kitchen redesign, which was part of a comprehensive home remodel, was a bit different from the usual. It wasn't a simple internal renovation, nor was it just a complete rebuild; rather, it was a blend of the two.

'On the site of our existing home was a cottage that we lived in for 20 years and had grown out of some time ago,' recalls interior designer Eliza Alles, founder of boutique design studio @houseofsandandsalt and the owner of the property.

'We have two sons who grew from little boys into teenagers in what felt like the blink of an eye. We picked up and moved our cottage to the back corner of our property and built a new home in its place.'

When it came to rethinking the kitchen design, Eliza wanted the space to feel more open, with a better flow and more breathing room, to contrast with the original kitchen and dining area, which she described as 'tight and rather uncomfortable.'

And despite the build taking place throughout COVID, it was relatively smooth sailing considering the circumstances. It helped that she prioritized sourcing as many pieces from local artisans and vendors.

'Being an interior designer, I had an extensive palette of materials on my wish list. As I dug into the ordering, I shopped local for as much as I could. For the things that I couldn’t get stateside, I decided to go the import route,' she says, noting items such as the floorboards from Denmark, the stove from Burgundy, and cabinetry made in the UK.

Every design decision was key to creating the coastal Scandinavian style Eliza wanted for her kitchen and the adjoining pantry. Light colors, organic textures, and subtle contrast that add interest without overwhelming have created that light, airy, and timeless aesthetic.

'Flooding the home with natural light was very important. From there I chose all matte and flat finishes. I wanted the softness of the finishes and the monochromatic nature-inspired palette to be the thread of coastal influence,' she explains.

'I then mixed and matched cabinet styles, metals, time periods, and styles of furniture and art to make the space visually interesting and eclectic while still feeling calm and coastal.'

The kitchen cabinets bring so much texture to the design. The slatted finish brings in a perfect blend of coastal and Scandi, while the kitchen island's freestanding style adds a less bulky feel to the space. It instantly feels more casual and inviting.

'Most people comment on the long, beautiful freestanding kitchen island and the gorgeous piece of stone that I was lucky enough to find in the length required,' she adds, highlighting the stunning Honed Calacutta gold marble countertops that add a touch of luxury while also forming the rounded kitchen backsplash behind the stove.

But one design feature that can't be ignored is the vaulted ceiling, complete with beautiful wooden beams. It's a feature that adds grandeur to a design, but can also make a space feel vast and empty if not approached in the right way.

'The high ceilings were a condition that the local Nantucket Historic District required of me. When I originally went in with my design, they felt the proportions from the exterior needed to change,' Eliza explains.

While it started as a concern for how the height would work in the design, it became 'a blessing' that allowed Eliza to introduce the transoms above the kitchen windows, 'accentuating the airy feel of the home.'

'I think the softness of the warm monochromatic materials lends itself to a calm space. If I had used high gloss, shiny, or loud materials with such high ceilings, the space would feel very different,' she adds.

She's also opted for wall lights rather than ceiling ones along the entire length of the kitchen. This approach not only creates a more intimate feel but is much more functional for task lighting, especially above the kitchen countertops.

But it's the pared-back, curated approach to decor that adds the perfect finishing touch to the kitchen. Visible from both the dining and living areas, it was crucial to keep the kitchen decor elevated so it didn't feel like a totally utilitarian corner, while also adhering to Scandinavian decorating techniques.

The oversized vase with large foliage becomes a real focus point, instantly drawing the eye from the living area. On the countertops, elevated kitchenware creates a more seamless, streamlined look, while stainless steel countertop appliances have been chosen to almost disappear into the background.

This kitchen design is a lesson in creating a warm, inviting design in a great room. Open-plan spaces with high ceilings can feel vast and almost empty, but Eliza's choice to introduce warm, organic materials, layered decor, and textured cabinets feels timeless, inviting, and the perfect example of coastal Scandi style.
